Damon Hill shares who he thinks has the most pace out of the current World Champions in F1

Damon Hill has said that Max Verstappen currently has better raw pace than both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Hill was asked to compare the three World Champions.

They got reacquainted at the last race as they all finished on the podium.

They had 11 World Championships between them, but neither Fernando Alonso nor Lewis Hamilton could match Max Verstappen’s speed in the Red Bull.

The Austrian team have won every race this season going into their home Grand Prix.

The Red Bull Ring will also host the second sprint race of the season on one of the shortest tracks on the grid.

Damon Hill believes Verstappen has more pace than his competitors right now, but doesn’t think Hamilton is far behind.

The young Dutchman may not even be driving at 100% right now given how quick his car currently is.

Asked who out of the top three from the Canadian GP has the most pace, Hill said: “Right now, for pace, I would say [Max] Verstappen, in other words just sheer one-lappery.

“I think he’s got that [Ayrton] Senna-esque kind of scary, on-the-edge speed.

“I know that Lewis [Hamilton] has that too, but Lewis is just a tiny bit more proselyte, a little bit more neat and tiny.

“It’s just that willingness that Max has to go into that danger zone, that’s the scary bit.”

It’s apt for Damon Hill to compare Verstappen to Ayrton Senna after the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Dutch driver matched his record for F1 wins when he took the chequered flag in Montreal.

He’s already ahead of Fernando Alonso for race wins, although Verstappen might not begrudge the Spanish legend winning a race this season.

It’s hard to see when that might happen this season given just how fast the Red Bull car is.

Verstappen will fancy himself to win both the Sprint Race and Sunday’s Grand Prix this weekend.

Hamilton and Alonso will hope to have something to say about that, but that’s easier said than done.
