The future of Adrian Newey has been a hot topic since he announced his intentions to leave Red Bull at the end of the season.

The 65-year-old has played an important role in their success over the last 18 years having designed their cars which went on to win championships between 2010 and 2013 with Sebastian Vettel, then later with Max Verstappen between 2021 and 2023.

After coming close to signing with Ferrari three times in his career, it looked like their fourth approach would finally pay off on the 65-year-old. Negotiations between Newey and Vasseur happened after he resigned from Red Bull and reached an advanced stage, with the Scuderia offering him the role he wanted.

According to a report in Italy, Aston Martin is now set to be the favourite to sign Newey with an announcement expected as early as September.

Discussing Aston Martin’s form on the F1 Nation podcast, former F1 driver Damon Hill shared some information on where he thinks Adrian Newey will end up.

Aston Martin has endured a difficult season so far after struggling to deliver on the promise of last year. Hill believes the team is effectively riding out a difficult few months, in anticipation of what could be coming in the future.

“They might be in a holding position and go ‘Well, this is the best we can do with what we’ve got right now. But we really will be able to do something amazing for next year,” said Hill.

“When you think about where certain people who design cars might go, that might be one of the places that could be on the list.”

When pressed on who that might be, Hill said: “I have no intel other than from someone who has nothing to do with friends of the Newey’s. It’s completely independent of anything, and they came to me with a bit of information which suggested there was something in the pipeline on that front.”

Adrian Newey set for Aston Martin

A move to the Silverstone-based team could be the perfect time for Newey, as Aston Martin is currently in the process of building one of the most impressive facilities in F1 at its headquarters.

Much of Newey’s influence is likely to be on their 2026 car when they will be making the switch from Mercedes to Honda power units.

The team recently signed ex-Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell, who was responsible for leading the team that created one of the most successful power units of the hybrid era.

Pressure has grown on technical director Dan Fallows to improve their current on-track form, but the arrival of Newey should give Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll some confidence that things are set to get better heading into the new regulation set.
