Damon Hill was transported to the days of Nigel Mansell leading the charge for Ferrari, seeing Lewis Hamilton at the British Grand Prix.
A heartbreaking end to the British Grand Prix cannot take away from what was a very strong performance from the seven-time world champion.
Despite Hamilton being issued a controversial five-second penalty early in the race for a false start, the Ferrari driver managed to claw his way back into the podium places towards the end of the race.

It was by no means easy going for Lewis Hamilton, who had to endure a difficult battle with former Mercedes teammate George Russell en route to his P3 finish.
But it was during this tense exchange that Damon Hill was reminded of another iconic Briton who drove for Ferrari.

Damon Hill saw shades of Nigel Mansell during Lewis Hamilton’s ‘risky’ battle with George Russell
During BBC Radio 5’s live coverage of the British Grand Prix, Damon Hill was thoroughly impressed by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s incredible exchange.
He called Hamilton’s driving some of the bravest he has ever seen, even saying his driving with Ferrari reminds him of the legendary Nigel Mansell.
“That was some of the bravest driving. I keep thinking of Nigel Mansell when I see Lewis in the Ferrari. He’s definitely not lost any of his courage.
Hill then added that Hamilton was taking as many risks as possible to overtake Russell, before taking a dig at the ‘yo-yo racing’ criticism levelled at the 2026 F1 regulations.
“He’s put himself in some risky positions trying to get past George with some brilliant wheel-to-wheel action. If it is yo-yo racing, I’m all for it.”

What are your thoughts on the British Grand Prix ending behind the safety car?
Lewis Hamilton left frustrated by British Grand Prix performance
Despite his incredible battle with Russell and earning a podium finish, Hamilton was far from pleased with his outing at the British Grand Prix, telling Sky Sports:
“Congrats to Charles. Charles did a great job today. All the magic that I had on Friday just disappeared through the weekend… Yeah, when it rains, it pours.
“I was just lacking front end. We massively underrated it with the front wing. That’s my fault and the engineering fault.”
The controversy surrounding the safety car at the end of the British Grand Prix has been a massive talking point, given how it not only cost Hamilton a chance at the win, but also led to him losing P2 to Russell.
Perhaps the sentiment would be softer had Hamilton won, but for Lewis Hamilton, the issues from the race go far beyond the application of the safety car rules.
