Formula 1 legend Damon Hill has shared his thoughts on Williams extending their deal to use Mercedes power units from the 2026 season onwards.

Williams have benefitted greatly from the partnership, with James Vowles’s team finishing best of the rest last season ahead of the likes of AlphaTauri and Alfa Romeo.

Posting on Instagram, Damon Hill has now shared what he thinks of their relationship being extended.

It’s not unusual for Formula 1 teams to collaborate on certain aspects of their car.

The relationship between Red Bull and AlphaTauri is closer than any other partnership in the sport.

So much so, that McLaren team principal Zak Brown has questioned whether they should be allowed to work together so closely.

There are only currently four power units to choose from on the grid, although Audi and General Motors will be providing offerings of their own in the near future.

Hill has now reacted to the news that Williams and Mercedes will continue to work together moving forward.

It’s a solution that works for both parties and Williams will hope it can eventually see them close the gap to the top teams on the grid.

Hill reacts to Williams using Mercedes power unit

Posting on social media when the news came out, Hill said: “Didn’t require much thinking I’d have thought”

Williams team principal James Vowles echoed Hill’s thoughts on the deal and said: “We have enjoyed a long-term partnership with Mercedes-Benz, and we are thrilled to extend this collaboration into the next era of Formula 1.

“The expertise, support and technology that Mercedes brings to the table align perfectly with our team’s aspirations in the medium and long term.

“This long-term agreement with Mercedes is a positive step and forms part of our objectives for the future, whilst we will still retain our design and manufacturing expertise and capabilities in-house.”

All eyes are now on how Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant can make the most of the Mercedes power unit.

Albon is looking to impress once again with his contract running out this year and several seats becoming available.

His American teammate is in a much more precarious position and will have to improve significantly on his rookie season.

Hill’s thoughts on the Williams deal with Mercedes will be shared by many within the Grove-based team.

They now need to make gains elsewhere on the car to try and close the gap to Alpine and Aston Martin.
