Damon Hill now says he could see one current driver running Formula 1 one day

Racing legend Damon Hill has admitted he could see Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso running Formula 1 one day.

Hill was chatting with journalist Tom Clarkson on the F1 Nation podcast.

He was comparing Alonso with the two World Champions he shared the podium with in Canada two weeks ago.

Hill admitted that Max Verstappen had more pace than his two rivals right now, which is unsurprising given the speed of his Red Bull.

However, Hill was very complimentary about the experience Alonso brings to Formula 1.

No driver has competed in more races than the legendary Spaniard.

He’s already 13 entries ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and still has another season and a half to complete with Aston Martin.

His knowledge of the sport and reputation within motor racing could potentially make him a good candidate to oversee F1.

It would be a huge responsibility to take up, but Hill has faith that he could be the right person to lead Formula 1 in the future.

Hill thinks Alonso could run Formula 1 one day

Speaking about the 41-year-old driver, Hill said: “I mean, Fernando [Alonso] could easily, it’s not inconceivable but you could imagine him running F1.

“He knows so much about the game but yeah he would definitely be someone who would be a big asset to a team I think if he wasn’t racing.”

Fernando Alonso won’t want to think about life after F1 just yet.

With Aston Martin, he’s achieving some of his best results for a very long time.

He’s already stood on the podium six times this year and although he’s unlikely to catch Max Verstappen, could finish second in the Drivers’ Championship.

Alonso hasn’t won a race since the 2013 season and will be desperate to add finally record win number 33.

He’s outclassed teammate Lance Stroll all season, who despite his connections with the team isn’t confirmed for next season, unlike the Spaniard.

Hill may believe that Alonso could reach Formula 1 one day.

Right now, the last thing that will be on his mind is thinking about a time when he’s not racing in one of F1’s quickest cars.
