The 2025 Singapore Grand Prix wasn’t a classic race, but Aston Martin veteran Fernando Alonso and Mercedes star George Russell will remember the weekend very fondly.
George Russell dominated qualifying and the race itself to earn Mercedes 25 crucial points at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The constructors’ championship is looking far healthier for Toto Wolff’s team as Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his second top-five finish on the bounce.
Below the top four teams in the standings, Williams lead the battle to finish fifth, but Aston Martin had the best weekend from the best of the rest thanks to Fernando Alonso.
Alonso has been extremely unlucky throughout 2025, and despite Lance Stroll failing to outqualify him this season, he sat behind the Canadian in the championship before Sunday’s race.
| RANK | DRIVER | TEAM | POINTS |
| 1 | George Russell | Mercedes | 25 |
| 2 | Max Verstappen | Red Bull | 18 |
| 3 | Lando Norris | McLaren | 15 |
| 4 | Oscar Piastri | McLaren | 12 |
| 5 | Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | 10 |
| 6 | Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | 8 |
| 7 | Fernando Alonso | Aston Martin | 6 |
| 8 | Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | 4 |
| 9 | Oliver Bearman | Haas | 2 |
| 10 | Carlos Sainz | Williams | 1 |
The 44-year-old reached Q3, while Stroll was eliminated in Q1, and raced to eighth despite a slow pit stop.
Alonso was furious with Lewis Hamilton as he cut corners on the final lap to finish seventh, but the seven-time world champion was eventually penalised, handing the Aston Martin star six valuable points.
Damon Hill was impressed with both Alonso and Russell, and couldn’t help but compare the Mercedes driver to a certain Max Verstappen.

Damon Hill says George Russell’s Singapore Grand Prix win was Max ‘Verstappen-esque’
Posting on his Instagram story after the race, Hill reacted to one of Alonso’s many brilliant radio messages.
Alonso said after being delivered a message by his race engineer halfway through the Grand Prix: “If you speak to me every lap, I will disconnect the radio.”
Hill admitted that you’ve ‘Got to love him’ as the two-time world champion made his feelings clear about the information he was receiving.
Reflecting on Russell’s brilliant performance at the front of the race on X, Hill admitted: “Great race and pole by George Russell, 1st class drive all weekend.
“Yes, I know he had an off. But not when it mattered. Verstappen-esque.”
It’s hard to disagree with Hill, as Russell’s victory was free from errors and barely seen by fans who were watching on TV.
Although he’s got a long way to go to try and match the 28-year-old’s win tally, Russell has proven this season that he would be a serious candidate to win the drivers’ championship if he had the right car this year.
