Craig Slater names ‘likeliest’ replacement if Williams decide to drop Logan Sargeant

Logan Sargeant caused a lot of work for his Williams mechanics when he crashed heavily during third practice for the Dutch Grand Prix.

The American lost control of his Williams coming out of the Hungenholtz Bocht banked section after dipping a wheel on the grass, causing him to spear off into the barriers.

The whole rear of the car and front took a heavy hit, while a fire also broke out on the engine cover causing further damage internally.

It was clear Logan Sargeant would not make qualifying, with him being forced to start the race from the back of the grid. But with the latest error from the American, rumours are starting to emerge over whether Williams will replace him for the remainder of the season.

After two candidates emerged as potential substitutions for Sargeant, journalist Craig Slater has revealed who the most ‘likeliest’ replacement could be for Williams when speaking on Sky Sports.

The ‘most likeliest’ replacement for Logan Sargeant

The spare parts situation at Williams has been well documented since the start of the season, with team principal James Vowles recently admitting that parts kept going missing in their factory.

Sargeant’s errors will not be doing them any favours, which is why he is potentially facing an early exit from the team.

Slater believes there is one ideal candidate should the team decide to replace Sargeant in the next race at Monza.

“My understanding is Williams is evaluating whether they should sub Sargeant out of the car before the end of the season, and perhaps place another driver in there, perhaps as a kindness to himself as his form is bedraggled at the moment,” said Slater.

“The options are limited, a lot of people have mentioned Kimi Antonelli to give him a bit of practice before his year at Mercedes. I understand there is zero interest from Mercedes in putting Antonelli in the Williams, it is also for Williams to put Liam Lawson in there who is part of the Red Bull programme.

“Mick Schumacher, given his contractual availability, is perhaps the likeliest driver if Logan decides to switch out Sargeant.”

Mick Schumacher available at short notice

Although Schumacher has been driving with Alpine for most of the year in the World Endurance Championship, he has still been part of their testing programmes.

He reportedly took part in a test alongside Jack Doonhan in an evaluation over who should partner Pierre Gasly next year, before the team chose to go with the Australian having invested millions in a testing programme.

Schumacher would be the ideal candidate as a driver who has been racing this year and his recent experience taking part in test and simulator sessions.

The German has not been on the grid since he was dropped at the end of 2022 due to crashing too much, although Schumacher has since earned a lot of praise from Toto Wolff.
