Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz had the perfect weekend to secure the fourth win of his Formula 1 career at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Team principal Frederic Vasseur couldn’t have asked for a better performance from outgoing driver Carlos Sainz as his time with Ferrari ends in December.

Martin Brundle loved what Sainz said after qualifying when he set two times fast enough for pole position.

He started alongside Max Verstappen on the front row and while the Dutchman got the better of him on the run down to turn one, he wasn’t stuck behind the Red Bull for long.

Sainz pulled off a brilliant move going down to the first corner after the safety car had come in, adjudging brilliantly in the following chicane to avoid breaching track limits.

The 30-year-old then sailed off into the distance, asking Charles Leclerc to slow down to avoid putting so much pressure on him at the front of the race.

Leclerc had to drive at 100% with Lando Norris closing down on him and he was eventually forced into a mistake coming out of the final corner that nearly cost him a podium finish.

However, it wasn’t plain sailing for Sainz and onboard footage from his Ferrari on F1TV has shared one difficulty he faced later in the race.

One of the joys of being at the front of a Grand Prix is the courtesy of having blue flags waved at slower drivers when they’re being lapped to avoid them hampering the leader’s race.

Sainz was particularly frustrated with RB driver Liam Lawson who had an eventful weekend and wasn’t in a hurry to move out of the way on Sunday’s winner.

Sainz was heading down to turn four when blue flags were being displayed to Lawson ahead of him, but the Kiwi driver stayed ahead in his battle with the car in front.

The Spanish driver was told on the team radio that he was now being shown ‘solid blues’ meaning Lawson had to move out of the way.

By the time he exited turn six, Sainz could read the sponsor on the back of Lawson’s rear wing, but heading through the fast turns in the next section, the 22-year-old stayed in front.

This prompted Sainz to shout, “Lawson, Lawson! That should be a penalty.”

Lawson finally moved out of the way heading down to turn 11 before his engineer said: “Yeah, stay cool, we are reporting it, we are right.”

Sainz continued, “He did a whole two sectors in front!” He was then reassured, “We have seen, we are reporting.”

Liam Lawson earns Helmut Marko praise despite tough battle with Sergio Perez

While Sainz didn’t face too many issues on his way to the chequered flag aside from Lawson being slow to move out of his way, the young Kiwi had much to deal with over the 71-lap race.

Lawson faced a difficult battle with Sergio Perez that saw the pair make contact on the exit of turn five.

Damon Hill and Martin Brundle disagreed on whether Lawson should be penalised but the Mexican driver wasn’t happy.

Helmut Marko praised Lawson’s aggression but admitted he shouldn’t have raced like that against a Red Bull driver.

The 22-year-old is fighting for his Formula 1 future and Brundle has shared who Lawson is ‘most likely’ to be racing for in 2025.

It could turn out that Lawson is fighting further up the grid than SAinz next year if things go to plan for the New Zealander.
