After seemingly accepting staying with Williams just last week, a poor result at the Hungarian Grand Prix may have changed Carlos Sainz’s mind.

Sainz finished an abysmal P18 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, just one place out of last ahead of Oliver Bearman of Haas.

It was a dire result for Sainz and Williams, who were outperformed today by the perennially disappointing Aston Martin, whose upgrades have catapulted them above the other underperforming teams.

Results like this will not help Sainz’s stock as a top-level driver in Formula 1, especially as his future with Williams remains uncertain.

And after the race, Carlos Sainz seemingly hinted at reconsidering his future with the team, especially after the incident with Oscar Piastri.

Carlos Sainz may have changed his mind about Williams after they failed to warn him about Oscar Piastri

Speaking to Marca and other Spanish outlets after the Hungarian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz confirmed that he will decide on his Williams future ‘calmly’ during the summer break.

Sainz also added how frustrated he was with Williams for not warning him about Oscar Piastri, and the ill-timed pit stop that cost him a stronger result.

“The plan is to decide, but yes, we have to look at it calmly.

“There were a lot of problems with the blue flags, because the system wasn’t working and we didn’t know, because the steering wheel normally warns us and today it didn’t warn us of anything, and on top of that, the team didn’t warn me much either.

“I was battling with Fernando for position, having a normal, everyday fight, and suddenly there was a McLaren there, which I didn’t even know existed.

“It’s a shame, because it cost us 5 seconds, and when we were having a good race, I was going at a very high pace for the car we had today.”

“I got into the fight with the Haas cars, something we weren’t expecting, after qualifying half a second behind yesterday…

“An unnecessary pit stop at the end when I was ahead of Bearman and Alex. I don’t know why they stopped me, as I was quite comfortable ahead of them, and they stopped me to put me behind them.”

Carlos Sainz may be swayed to leave Williams after Hungarian Grand Prix

Sainz’s comments about reconsidering his future come just a week after he seemingly declared his intention to stay with Williams.

After the Belgian Grand Prix, Sainz said he was committed to helping Williams into 2027, suggesting that he wasn’t exploring his options outside of the team.

Perhaps this result has changed his mind, and he will now be more scrutinising in his decision over the coming weeks.

If Sainz does decide to leave, the team may have already prepared for his exit, as James Vowles was seen dining with Franco Colapinto earlier this week, potentially lining him up as a replacement.
