Anthony Davidson predicts how many more races Mercedes will win this season

If there was one team that didn’t want a four-week summer break after the Belgian Grand Prix, it was Mercedes.

After finishing second in the Constructors’ Championship last year – albeit hundreds of points behind Red Bull – Mercedes appeared to be on the back foot compared to their rivals this season.

Ferrari looked like Red Bull’s strongest challenger during the early stages of the campaign before an upgrade package delivered in Miami suddenly gave McLaren an advantage over the rest of the grid.

However, Toto Wolff’s team unlocked another level of performance in Canada when George Russell took pole position and should have won the race in Montreal.

Two races later, Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix, albeit after Max Verstappen and Lando Norris made contact and ended their hopes of standing on the top step of the podium.

However, just a week later Lewis Hamilton deservedly won an emotional home race at Silverstone on merit and the team thought they’d secured a one-two finish at Spa before Russell was disqualified.

Hopes were high for Mercedes heading to the Dutch Grand Prix, but they disappointingly came home in 7th and 8th with tyre degradation causing them a big problem – alongside Hamilton’s struggles in qualifying.

Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 Podcast, Anthony Davidson has been reflecting on the order of merit at the front of the grid.

There’s a real battle going on for the Constructors’ Championship now between McLaren and Red Bull, while Ferrari have a 94-point lead over Mercedes despite their recent struggles.

Davidson has now predicted that despite Mercedes failing to impress at Zandvoort, he expects them to win at least two more races this season if not more.

They could end up playing a pivotal role in who sits on top of the team standings when the chequered flag flies in Abu Dhabi.

Talking about the teams at the front of the grid, Davidson said: “I completely agree that McLaren, they have the best car at the moment, it’s clear to see.

“It will ebb and flow on different circuits and who knows, Ferrari might be the fastest car around Singapore and circuits like that or Mexico.

“It’s exciting because it’s not just Red Bull running away with it again like they have done the last couple of seasons.

“And it’s not just one team that are possibly able to challenge them once in a while.

“You can have Mercedes dominating a race, like we saw, [as they] should have been in Silverstone and how fast they were in Spa.

“It’s easy to forget that just in one Grand Prix after we go to Zamdvoort. Oh yeah, Mercedes were nowhere and we can’t expect them to be fast again through to the end of the year, so it’s all about McLaren and Red Bull.

“No, they will be back. They will probably win another race or two, or maybe more through to the end of the year.”

Marc Priestley explains where Mercedes were ‘lost’ at the Dutch Grand Prix

Mercedes have made slow progress during this period of Formula 1, as Hamilton went nearly 1000 days without a race win before his triumph at Silverstone.

It’s unlikely that he’s regretting his move to Ferrari just yet despite Mercedes having won more races this year, but all eyes will soon be on how each team prepares for the next era of F1 in 2026.

Former McLaren mechanic Marc Priestley has shared why Mercedes were lost in Zandvoort.

The McLaren appears to be the only car which performs consistently at every track – although a similar argument could be made about Sauber, albeit not in a positive light.

If Mercedes can discover a way to keep their car driving at the same level across the course of the season, they’ll be hoping to challenge McLaren and Red Bull next season.
