Alex Albon shares what James Vowles said to convince him to stay at Williams amid exit talks

There have been plenty of twists and turns in the Formula 1 driver’s market this year but so far only a handful of drivers have made a leap of faith to switch teams for 2025.

That’s almost certainly going to change with the final half a dozen seats left to be filled still open because teams are exploring every possible opportunity before asking a driver to put pen to paper.

One of the most exciting drivers who was potentially available for next season was Alex Albon.

Williams team principal James Vowles made a point of saying during pre-season that Albon was tied down to a contract until the end of next year, as per The Independent.

However, it was unlikely to be as straightforward as that with clauses inserted into every driver’s deal that make it easier to negotiate an exit for both parties should one be required.

You only have to look at what’s happening with Sergio Perez’s contract at Red Bull to see how precarious surviving in Formula 1 can be.

Albon was speaking on the P1 Podcast and talking about his recent contract extension and what Vowles said to him to convince him to extend his time with Williams.

Red Bull were among the teams with an interest in Albon and that looks like an even more possible option given the uncertainty around their driver line-up.

Mercedes also looked at a move for Albon, but he’s now set to help Williams develop their car going into the next set of Formula 1 regulations.

Asked about the decision to sign a new contract, Albon said: “The changes we have to make to be at the top are so big that it will create setbacks as well, it will take a bit of a learning period for us to understand to get into that routine of what a top team operates likes.

“I was in the middle of renegotiating or extending a contract, but looking elsewhere truthfully at the same time.

“He [James Vowles] was telling me, ‘Well, this is going to take longer than I first thought’, and I was like, ‘Well that’s not that good!’.

“But, he always has a plan and he really pushes through and you can tell he really does want this team to succeed and he’s a very smart guy and I believe in what he says and the process we have.”

Who will join Alex Albon at Williams in 2025?

Alex Albon is a very good driver and well-positioned to continue leading Williams in 2025 and beyond.

However, it’s looking less and less likely that Logan Sargeant will be the driver who joins him on the grid next season.

Sargeant has been linked with a move to IndyCar in 2025 with several drivers being touted to replace him.

Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas looks like the most likely candidate to join Williams at this stage.

However, there are still several free agents on the market who would snap up the chance to drive for the Grove-based team.

Jenson Button even suggested Franco Colapinto would be a good option for Williams should Vowles choose to promote a driver from their academy.

Unfortunately, the fate of the last two rookies to come through the ranks at Williams – Sargeant and Nicholas Latifi – might put the team off giving Colapinto a go.
