Alex Albon shares the key issue that’s cost Williams ‘quite a lot of points’ this season

Williams have gone into the summer break with just two points-scoring finishes to their name, only sitting above Sauber in the Constructors’ Championship.

Alex Albon finished 9th in Monaco and at Silverstone to earn the team’s only points of the campaign, while Logan Sargeant is one of three drivers yet to get off the mark.

On the whole, this season’s Williams is a more well-rounded car than last year’s but that has its pros and cons.

Last year’s Williams car was exceptionally quick in a straight line and that meant certain tracks suited them very well.

Esteban Ocon couldn’t believe how quick Albon was in Canada in 2023 as he scored more points in that one race than the team have managed throughout this year.

Speaking on the team’s official YouTube channel going into the summer break, Albon and Sargeant admitted they were disappointed with how the season had played out.

Development has been sluggish at the Williams factory this year as they set about changing their practices to try and ensure some success in the future.

That left Sargeant without a chassis in Australia and new updates arrived slower than expected.

Albon has admitted that he thinks Williams would have scored plenty more points if they had fixed the weight issues with the car.

The margins are incredibly fine on the grid this year which means if a car isn’t right on the weight limit, they’re losing precious time to their rivals.

Ultimately, it’s one of the things that have cost the team this season.

Alex Albon blames overweight Williams car for costing the team points in 2024

Asked to give his honest opinion on how the 2024 season has gone so far, Albon said: “I think it’s fair to say that we’re a little bit disappointed [compared] to where we expected to be.

“I feel like part of me knows that if we were on weight since the beginning of the year, we would have scored quite a lot of points I think.

“I think we’ve just been on the back foot but the car has been OK, it’s definitely an improvement to last year but we’ve just had a couple of things hold us back and obviously the delays didn’t help.

“Sargeant added: “Yeah, I mean I think for me the car is definitely a step in the right direction but honestly it’s relative, right?

“Everyone’s improved and I think we were hoping to make a bit of a bigger step than we did.

“But we have an upgrade coming after the break which could potentially kick us into the right direction.”

Alex Albon told he’s made a mistake committing to Williams

Albon has had an interesting Formula 1 career, rising through the ranks of the Red Bull junior team quickly after a phenomenal karting career.

He was racing alongside Max Verstappen after just 12 Grand Prix but at the end of the following season, he was out of the team altogether.

Williams offered Albon a lifeline and he’s outclassed Nicholas Latifi and Sargeant during his time with the team.

However, Albon has been told that his management should have found him a top seat this year ahead of the 2025 season.

He faces a much tougher challenge against Carlos Sainz next year who has similar ambitions to return to the front of the grid.

Both drivers will hope that they have an improved car on the weight limit at the beginning of next season in the final year of the current regulations.
