Alex Albon has admitted that Williams have had to reposition their focus after a dismal start to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
After a promising 2025 campaign, it was expected that Williams would make a further step forward this year and take the fight to the likes of Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull.
However, Williams have endured a nightmare start to the season, with the FW48 proving to be problematic.
Despite having a Mercedes power unit, which is considered the best on the grid, Williams have had to deal with weight and chassis issues, putting them down towards the back of the field.
Both Albon and teammate Carlos Sainz have been vocal about the FW48, with Williams said to be planning an upgrade that could gain 0.5 seconds per lap.

Alex Albon makes honest admission after Williams’ dismal start to the 2026 F1 season
Appearing on the latest episode of The Fast and The Curious podcast, Albon was asked about how Williams spent F1’s April break.
The 30-year-old admitted that it will be ‘tough’ to turn things around quickly and also stated that the team’s focus has been altered.
Albon said: “It is, it will be tough, but there is so much baggage on the car, I can see how no one says it’s easy, but there is a lot of potential for us to go forward.
“It won’t happen overnight, it’s really like a race-by-race chip away at it kind of thing. I think, for example, we have an upgrade package in Miami. It will be better, but it won’t be the biggest thing since sliced bread.
“It is kind of that thing, realistically, we are now repositioning our focus, it will be to get back to the midfield fight and then getting to the top of that fight.
“Let’s see, but with the new regulation change, the potential for the team to improve is massive and I think by the end of the year, we will have a completely different car than what we have now. Full push ahead, the factory is working flat out.”

James Vowles says Williams have refined their approach for the remainder of 2026
After a rough start, Williams team boss Vowles has labelled next week’s Miami Grand Prix as an ‘opportunity’ to show the team’s next step.
Taking to LinkedIn, Vowles wrote: “The start of the season wasn’t what we wanted. One of the things it’s shown us is that how a team responds to challenges says more about them than how they handle the wins, podiums, and rise to the top.
“At Atlassian Williams F1 Team, we talk about accountability and resilience every day – if you walk through our factory or race bay, you’ll see them on the walls. This break is where those values have to show up in practice.
“Over the last few weeks, we’ve come together as a team to go through the data, accelerate research and simulation, and refine our approach for the rest of the season.
“Our drivers are back in the simulator and the crew are working on pit stop practice. On the development side, we’re pushing hard on all elements, most importantly the weight of the car.
“Every hour of this period has a purpose. Miami is the opportunity to show our next step forward. We know we’re not going to be the finished article – but we’re looking forward to making progress, and getting back to the track.”
