Adrian Newey isn’t expected to announce his next adventure in Formula 1 until at least September, but important steps are being taken behind the scenes by several teams on the grid to try and secure his signature.
It speaks volumes about just how impressive Adrian Newey is that Red Bull having a 71-point lead over nearest rivals Ferrari is seen as slightly concerning.
The fact that the gap between Red Bull and their closest rivals has closed in 2024 comes down to several factors.
Firstly, the grid has converged because Red Bull got so close to the maximum potential of the current ruleset in 2023 that there wasn’t much more they could do to improve.
This has allowed the likes of Ferrari and particularly McLaren and Mercedes in recent races to match Max Verstappen’s performances.
However, it also comes down to the worrying recent form of Sergio Perez.
Perez has clauses in his contract that would allow him to be dropped during the summer break and he doesn’t look like he’s going to fulfil that performance criteria.
Nevertheless, Newey is still very much a man in demand and it appears as though he’s entered further discussions with one of Red Bull’s rivals on the grid, as per Formu1a.Uno.
Every team below the top four manufacturers will be beginning to wonder when they should start concentrating more closely on the new 2026 regulations.
Aston Martin appear to be building towards the next ruleset with every update they put on the current car failing to help them make the necessary step forward.

Newey could help them make a giant leap in 2026 and he had dinner with team owner Lawrence Stroll last year.
It would be a huge coup for a team who have yet to secure a podium this season.

Adrian Newey had dinner with Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll last week
The report from Formu1a Uno suggests an ‘important’ dinner happened between Newey and Stroll last week.
They suggest that a deadline has now been set for Newey to provide a ‘first important’ response to what Stroll has offered him.
Newey recently visited Aston Martin’s factory and staff were sent home to try and keep his tour a secret.
Aston Martin are in the process of building one of the most impressive facilities in motorsport at Silverstone right now.
They’re also hiring some very exciting staff members from other teams in the paddock which might play a part in Newey’s thinking.
Big changes coming to the Aston Martin Formula 1 team
Lawrence Stroll appears to want some stability within the Aston Martin team while also developing the talents around those key figures.
Unsurprisingly, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have been confirmed until at least the end of the 2026 season.
Alonso has been frustrated with Aston Martin recently as the team are being dragged into the midfield rather than challenging for podiums.
However, the signing of the likes of Andy Cowell and Enrico Cardile are seen as brilliant additions behind the scenes.
Progress has to be made before the 2025 campaign to show that Aston Martin understand the current car and can take steps forward with their current set-up to prove to Newey that a base exists within the team for him to build on.
Newey has so many options to choose from that Aston Martin setting him a deadline seems slightly arbitrary.
However, they’re pushing hard to bring him in ahead of the likes of Ferrari and Williams and although Stroll has rebuffed one contract demand from Newey, he’s likely to find a compromise to get his man.
