Michael Andretti has admitted he’s already in the process of working with the FIA to start his own F1 team.

Andretti provided an update on his efforts to enter Formula 1 while speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday.

Formula 1 has been stuck on ten teams since 2015 when Caterham dropped out of the sport.

During that time there’s always been discussions about new constructors joining Formula 1.

The expense of the sport makes it very difficult to enter the fray, and even tougher to compete at the front of the grid.

However, the sport’s continued expansion into the USA means there’s more reason than ever for a team from across the Atlantic to try and get involved.

Michael Andretti is the man attempting to do that, with an all-new Cadillac engine to go with it.

Andretti provided an update on his effort to enter a team in F1, with the FIA open to new applications.

An expanded Formula 1 grid may not be as far away as first thought.

Andretti provides update on F1 team chances

Asked if he thought he could introduce a new team to Formula 1, Andretti said: “That’s our goal [to have a team of our own]. We’re working on it.

“We have that process that we’re in the middle of with the FIA. We’re submitting our paperwork this week, and hopefully getting an answer middle of July. So we’re making good progress.

“We’re already doing [a lot of work]. It’s already happening. We’re building a team as we speak.”

Formula 1 has only ever held two races in the United States in one season before this year.

After Max Verstappen’s win in Miami, the F1 circus will return later in the season to Austin and Las Vegas.

Andretti is hoping that by 2025 he’ll have an F1 team of his own driving around his home country’s circuits.

The process to get into Formula 1 is never straightforward.

There are likely to be plenty of twists and turns before Andretti is given a final answer on his bid.

Andretti has history with Formula 1, as his father was Mario Andretti, who was previously an F1 champion.

His current racing team, Andretti Autosport, competes in IndyCar and Formula E.

Andretti would now love to add a F1 team to his collection and reach the pinnacle of motor racing.
