£570m F1 outfit increasing the pressure on ‘self-confident’ team principal after tough 2024 season

While the focus at each Formula 1 Grand Prix is on the 20 drivers on the track, there are 10 team principals nervously sitting in the garage or the pit wall wondering if the decisions they’ve made over the previous days, weeks and months are going to pay off.

It’s an extremely high-pressure situation and every decision – no matter how big or small – is heavily scrutinised and could have monumental consequences.

For the likes of Andrea Stella at McLaren, for example, while he probably can’t relax, he can take comfort from the fact that the way he’s led the team alongside Zak Brown appears to be paying off.

However, journalist Christian Nimmervoll writing for Motorsport-Total has suggested that one of Stella’s colleagues in the paddock might be under some increasing pressure soon.

The teams towards the back of the grid are fighting for every last point which given the increased levels of reliability makes things very difficult.

Sauber are still pointless and Alpine have only enjoyed a resurgence in the past two races after a very difficult beginning to the campaign.

However, Nimmervoll believes that Williams team principal James Vowles might be under pressure from the team’s owners soon.

The £570m-valued team, as per Forbes, are 9^th in the Constructors’ Championship after 10 race weekends.

Alex Albon’s impressive race in Monaco is their only top-ten finish this season while question marks remain over teammate Logan Sargeant’s future.

James Vowles under increasing pressure at Williams

Talking about the Williams team, Nimmervoll said: “But Vowles is selling Williams investors at Dorilton Capital a narrative about how he will turn the team around, and he leaves no doubt, even publicly, that he is thinking only on the grandest of scales.

“He is publicly rolling out the red carpet for a star driver like Carlos Sainz, and dozens of new employees are to be hired in the next few months. The plan is to make progress step by step until Williams is once again what it once was: one of the best teams in Formula 1.

“But this self-confident self-image also increases the pressure on the boiler. There are already rumours behind closed doors that some at Dorilton Capital would like to see signs in the results list that things are slowly moving forward.”

James Vowles’s next big decision is his 2025 driver line-up

Vowles is an impressive character in the paddock but fully understands the number of steps forward Williams need to take to reach a level they’re happy with.

He’s been dealing with plenty of out-of-date practices and facilities at the team’s headquarters which have been holding them back.

However, he’s positive that the future is bright for the team and one of the main reasons why is retaining Alex Albon beyond the 2024 season.

Albon admitted that Williams having access to Mercedes engines for 2026 and beyond was a key reason for that decision and could see them advance up the standings at the beginning of the new regulations.

Williams need to decide on Albon’s next teammate with Logan Sargeant expected to move on.

Carlos Sainz is their number one target although Williams might be slightly concerned by Alpine’s late play to hire the Spaniard.

If they miss out on the three-time race winner then the likes of Valtteri Bottas could be in contention.

Vowles is making all of the right noises and his previous successful experience in F1 means he deserves plenty of time at Williams, but nobody is immune from feeling the pressure of their team owners if things aren’t going to plan.
