The Miami Grand Prix didn’t go to plan for Ferrari or Lewis Hamilton despite his third-place finish in Saturday’s Sprint Race.

Lewis Hamilton started the Sprint Race at the Miami Grand Prix from the fourth row of the grid after being two-tenths slower than teammate Charles Leclerc during qualifying.

However, Leclerc found the barriers with his Ferrari before even reaching the grid, and Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli’s collision in the pit lane ruined both of their races.

It meant the seven-time world champion was the best of the rest behind the two McLarens, however, it required Hamilton to make a brilliant strategy call from within the car to earn that result.

Unfortunately, Sunday’s race was a much tougher affair for Hamilton and Leclerc as they squabbled over P7 and P8.

The 40-year-old nearly fell even further down the pecking order on the final lap after a hopeful lunge from Carlos Sainz, and it would have summed up how Ferrari’s season is going if Hamilton was taken out at the final corner.

However, behind the scenes, Hamilton and team principal Fred Vasseur are working hard to resolve these issues.

Lewis Hamilton and Fred Vasseur discussed tyre strategies before the Miami Grand Prix

Journalist Frederic Ferret was speaking on the F1 Nation Podcast after the race in Miami.

Ferret was asked if Ferrari is currently a harmonious team behind the scenes after their tough start to 2025 and insisted, “100%, and I’m not b——— you.

“They are very calm and, yes, they want to improve.

“Charles is very upset when he says, I can’t be eighth on the grid because I’m a Ferrari driver and I want to win.

“Lewis, this morning, went to speak with Fred while we were having coffee and said, ‘I want to talk with you about the tyres.’

“It was nine o’clock on the Sunday morning of the race, and he was not complaining, he was trying to help.

“So there is not at all a problem, we already heard Lewis speaking toughly with Bono when they were having problems [at Mercedes].

“I think it’s so easy for us journalists to write a story about Ferrari having big problems. It’s so easy for us.

“I think it’s more complicated than that, and if they have a big problem, it’s bringing the car at the right speed on the Saturday on one lap.”

Fred Vasseur sent mixed messages about Ferrari’s Miami Grand Prix strategy

Ferrari fans will love how dedicated Hamilton is to solving the team’s issues even when things aren’t going to plan on the track.

Hamilton put in long hours at Ferrari’s factory during pre-season, having been blocked from taking part in 2024’s post-season test due to his Mercedes commitments.

He would have expected to be running closer to the front of the pack before the campaign started, especially considering how Ferrari ended last year.

Hamilton’s positive attitude after the race in Miami suggests that he’s not even close to giving up on 2025 even if both championships already look out of reach.

Vasseur kept changing his story about Ferrari’s odd radio messages after the Grand Prix, potentially highlighting the lack of joined-up thinking within the team.

However, Hamilton and Vasseur’s relationship is going to be vitally important to moving the team forward and the seven-time world champion seems to be constantly thinking how to find marginal gains in a car that isn’t quite at the right level yet.
