McLaren star Oscar Piastri has admitted that he doesn’t want to see Lewis Hamilton win the 2024 Drivers’ Championship in his last season with Mercedes.
The young Australian wasn’t feeling too nostalgic about Lewis Hamilton’s last hurrah with the Silver Arrows before he moves to Ferrari next year.
Oscar Piastri was speaking on The Fast and The Curious Podcast before the start of his second season in Formula 1.
Piastri doesn’t want to see Hamilton win 2024 title
Understandably, Piastri isn’t too keen to see the seven-time world champion add an eighth title to his collection.
While the 22-year-old has yet to win his first Grand Prix – officially his Sprint Race victory in Qatar doesn’t count – he will feel he has an outside shot of being in the title conversation this year.
Both he and Lando Norris were regularly challenging for podiums last season once McLaren delivered some incredible upgrades.
They went from the back of the grid in Bahrain to only being outscored by Red Bull in the second half of the season.
McLaren will back themselves to be in the running to win races in 2024 and Piastri will hope that gives him a chance to regularly compete with Lewis Hamilton on track.

The Australian had the best rookie season since the 39-year-old’s debut campaign with the same team back in 2007.
He went on to win his first title the following year and that’s the same aim Piastri has going into this season.
Piastri has no time for fitting end to Hamilton-Mercedes partnership
The young driver was asked by host Greg James: “Wouldn’t it be incredible if Lewis Hamilton won [the title] again this year?”
Piastri disagreed and said: “No it would not be incredible, what are you talking about?
“I think Oscar Piastri winning his first world championship would be a much better story!”
While Piastri’s suggestion that he could win the title ahead of Hamilton in 2024 was slightly tongue-in-cheek, he does look like the most talented driver in his age group right now.
The likes of Theo Pourchaire and Felipe Drugovich can’t even get on the grid – much to the frustration of Eddie Jordan – while last year’s other rookies failed to reach his level.
McLaren are one of the most exciting teams on the grid at the moment and if they can continue the momentum they built up in 2023 then they might have the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull looking over their shoulder.
Piastri and Norris are also two of the youngest drivers on the grid and Andrea Stella will hope they’re both looking to stay with the team for years to come given their vast potential.
