David Coulthard has admitted that he would have put 22-year-old driver Liam Lawson in this season’s RB if he was in charge.

Visa Cash App RB – also known as RB or simply V-CARB – will be hoping their closer ties with Red Bull give them a much-needed boost in 2024.

Speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast, David Coulthard shared that he wouldn’t have stuck with their current driver partnership for this season.

Coulthard would have put Lawson in 2024 RB car

For the first time in Formula 1’s storied history, not a single driver changed teams over the winter break.

That could have led to a very quiet off-season, were it not for Haas letting Guenther Steiner go and Ferrari announcing that Lewis Hamilton will be joining them in 2025.

Already people are looking forward to seeing how the driver market will develop after the bombshell news that the seven-time world champion is on the move.

The driver who is almost certainly at the front of the queue of drivers waiting for an opportunity in Formula 1 is Liam Lawson.

He was outstanding during his cameo for AlphaTauri last year when Daniel Ricciardo was ruled out due to injury.

So much so that Coulthard believes the newly-named RB team should have offered Lawson a permanent seat.

Considering his co-host Eddie Jordan isn’t quite sure about Yuki Tsunoda and Ricciardo didn’t blow anyone away on his return to the grid, it’s not the most far-fetched suggestion.

Lawson patiently waiting for F1 opportunity

Speaking about the 22-year-old, Coulthard said: “I agree with you on Liam Lawson, I personally would have stuck him in the AlphaTauri or the Racing Bulls as it’s now called.”

Lawson was thrown into the action in Zandvoort which was arguably the toughest race of last season due to the rapidly changing weather conditions.

In Singapore, he scored his first points and matched Tsunoda once he got used to the car.

Lawson’s potential means Red Bull will likely listen to Coulthard’s suggestion and get him in the RB sooner rather than later.

Christijan Albers has suggested that change could happen mid-season, while his future is likely to depend on Sergio Perez’s contract situation and who Red Bull decide should replace him.
