Fernando Alonso has shared what Lance Stroll did last season that was ‘far from ideal’ for Aston Martin.
Ahead of the 2023 season, Fernando Alonso made a huge decision to leave Alpine for Aston Martin.
However, speaking on Season 6 of Drive to Survive, the iconic Spanish driver wasn’t happy with his new teammate.
Drive to Survive – Alonso admits Stroll didn’t help Aston Martin last season
There was plenty of anticipation heading into the 2023 season when Fernando Alonso decided to make the move to Aston Martin.
The team hadn’t performed brilliantly the year before despite having four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel in the car.
He announced his retirement before the end of that season and all of a sudden, the team were looking for a replacement to partner Lance Stroll.
The most experienced man on the grid – Fernando Alonso – made the move despite Alpine finishing above Aston Martin in the Constructors’ Championship in 2022.
However, it proved to be a great call, with the Spaniard securing eight podiums during his first year with the team.

Alonso has admitted during Season 6 of Drive to Survive that Stroll did something last season that really didn’t help the team.
Aston Martin suddenly had the second-fastest car on the grid at the beginning of the season, but only Alonso could take full advantage.
Stroll injury big talking point in Drive to Survive Season 6
Just before pre-season testing in 2023, Lance Stroll had a big cycling accident that meant his involvement in the first race of the season was in doubt.
He broke both of his wrists and two toes on his right foot, making driving a Formula 1 car incredibly difficult and he missed pre-season testing.
Asked about it, Alonso said: “It is not a help for sure. It’s far from ideal in terms of a team perspective. We just hope that he can race. That’s the first priority.”
However, Stroll recorded a fantastic eighth place in qualifying Bahrain and after the session, Alonso can be seen going up to the Canadian and saying: “Great driving bro, good job!”
Alonso was phenomenal on race day and secured his first podium of the season behind the two Red Bulls.
Stroll ended up sixth, splitting the two Mercedes drivers much to the surprise of many given the extent of his injuries, although he did make contact with his teammate during the race.
Ultimately, Stroll couldn’t match the more experienced Alonso throughout last season but showed glimpses of his potential.
He’ll want to improve on his 10th-place finish in the drivers’ standings in 2023 heading into this year.
