Christian Horner and Toto Wolff regularly locked horns during the former’s time as the head of Red Bull Racing, with one ‘heated exchange’ taking place behind the scenes during the notorious 2021 season.

As two of the most successful team principals in the modern era of F1, it is no surprise at all that Christian Horner and Toto Wolff butted heads on a regular basis. Between them, they won every single F1 world championship between 2010 and 2024.

However, heading into the 2021 campaign, Horner has realised that the opportunity of finally dethroning Mercedes after seven years of total dominance from the German constructor had presented itself to him.

As such, tensions reached a new all-time high, which added to the reasons why the 2021 title fight between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen was one of the most explosive championship battles in F1 history.

During a 2022 episode of the Beyond the Grid podcast, Horner relived the tension-filled events of the 2021 title fight between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

The British Grand Prix that year served up one of the, if not the, biggest flash points of the season. As the two highly ambitious drivers duked it out on the opening lap, it ended in disaster for the Dutchman.

Verstappen suffered a 51g crash as a result of Hamilton tagging his right-rear tyre at Copse corner, and Horner was furious with Wolff’s defence of his driver in the stewards’ room.

Was Michael Masi unfairly treated over how Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton to win the 2021 F1 title?

Horner took issue with Wolff’s communications with the then-race director, Michael Masi, and things came to a head between the two team principals inside race control.

“It really permeated at Silverstone, where suddenly there was an awful lot of dialogue, suddenly from Toto to Michael,” Horner revealed. “Then he’s sending him an email, and then he’s coming up. And I thought, ‘Right, okay, I’m not having that. I’m going up.’

“I felt it was incredibly one-sided that a team principal should not be able to lobby and influence the race director.

“With hindsight, Toto and I had a fairly heated exchange in race control at that event, where Toto was obviously arguing his corner that his driver shouldn’t be penalised.

“I’ve got a driver in the hospital and a car taken out of the race, and I was obviously feeling pretty aggrieved by it.”

Toto Wolff has admitted that F1 needs a figure like Christian Horner inside the paddock

Despite their tendency to get on each other’s nerves inside the F1 paddock, Wolff has since acknowledged the void that Horner left following his abrupt sacking from the team in the midst of the 2025 campaign.

Horner was regularly dubbed as the paddock’s resident villain, which was actually one of the reasons why he ended up falling out of favour with Red Bull’s top brass during his final days at the team.

However, Wolff has since voiced his opinion that F1 is now missing that sort of figure in the sport.

The Austrian executive previously highlighted how there are no longer any ‘polarising protagonists’ in F1 following Horner’s exit, which has become detrimental to the overriding narratives.
