Former Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill has reacted to one aspect of Red Bull Racing 2024 car ideas that could make a big impact on the grid this season.

Under the guidance of Adrian Newey, Red Bull have led the way in Formula 1 in the past few seasons when it comes to the development of their car.

Taking to Instagram, Damon Hill has admitted there’s one potential aspect of the RB20 that has really surprised him.

It says a lot about how much Red Bull think their rivals will catch up to them this year that they’ve made so many changes to last year’s car.

After winning every race but one in 2023, they’ve taken steps to dominate even further despite F1’s regulations not changing again for another two years.

In the history of Formula 1, teams have generally acted quickly to try and put their own unique spin on the most successful car on the grid.

Looking at the other designs shared so far, there has been a trend to move closer to Red Bull’s unbelievable RB19.

However, Newey and his design team clearly think there are still more improvements to be found under the current rules.

They appear to have taken inspiration from a concept Mercedes experimented with in the last couple of years – the ‘zeropod’.

Last year’s W13 barely had any sidepods and they’ve moved away from that idea last year.

However, Autosport believes it’s a direction Red Bull will be going in with their car after the opening races when temperatures will cool from Japan onwards, much to the surprise of Damon Hill.

They’ve already hidden their floor design after the initial launch of their car and it will be interesting to see what other tricks they have up their sleeve this season.

Red Bull once again trying to outthink F1 rivals

Posting on social media in reaction to the story that Red Bull might be introducing the zeropod on their car going forward, Hill simply said: “Are they havin’ [having] a larf [laugh]?”

It’s hard to imagine Red Bull will be as dominant in 2024 as they were in 2023.

The likes of McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes were all catching them towards the end of the season but they had stopped developing last year’s car very early on.

The chances of Verstappen recording another 19 wins in one campaign seem slim but you simply can’t write him off at this stage.

It would have been very easy for Red Bull to make minimal changes to the RB19 and hope that was enough to secure another pair of championships.

Instead, they’ve taken steps forward in multiple areas and while that could backfire, the reputation of the engineers and designers implementing those changes suggests that the rest of the grid could be on the back foot once again.
