Which F1 drivers do well at Mexico City Grand Prix with Max Verstappen successful

The Mexico City Grand Prix has seen a flurry of Formula 1 drivers win with only a few making repeat trips to the top of the podium, so who are the most successful pilots?

An array of racers have relished competing at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez since the circuit debuted on the F1 calendar in 1963 as the Mexican Grand Prix. Substantial funding by the local government has seen the race utilise the name, Mexico City Grand Prix, since 2021.

British F1 drivers have particularly enjoyed their trips to Mexico City since the debut running of the Mexican GP. Jim Clark was the first Formula 1 driver to win the Mexican Grand Prix as part of the world championship, having shared the win in 1962 when it was staged as a trial.

Max Verstappen is the most successful F1 driver at the Mexico City Grand Prix

Yet while British drivers have dominated the leaderboard of Formula 1 aces with repeat wins at the Mexican GP so far, Max Verstappen is the most successful pilot to date with a string of wins before and after it became the Mexico City GP. The Dutchman got his first win in 2017.

Red Bull driver Verstappen won the 2017 Mexican GP by 19.678 seconds over Valtteri Bottas and by 54.007s to Kimi Raikkonen in third place. Yet ninth place that day was still enough for Lewis Hamilton to seal his fourth F1 drivers’ title and third for Mercedes with two races left.

History repeated itself in 2018, too, as Verstappen won the Mexican GP on the day Hamilton secured his fifth F1 drivers’ title. Again, the Stevenage-born star did not have to stand on the rostrum as fourth place meant he had earned enough points to deny Sebastian Vettel again.

Hamilton, having won in 2016, then returned to winning ways at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez at what would be the final Mexican Grand Prix in 2019. But Verstappen has been the class of the Formula 1 field since the event became the Mexico City Grand Prix in 2021.

The Mexican GP has seen five repeat winners as a Formula 1 race

Verstappen dominating in the Mexico City Grand Prix era has seen the Dutchman move clear as the most successful F1 driver in the history of the Mexican Grand Prix. He is also only one of two non-British drivers to secure repeat wins at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez yet.

Clark became the first Formula 1 driver to secure multiple wins at the Mexican Grand Prix in 1967 as the Briton added to his triumph from the inaugural running in 1963. It then took F1 until 1990 before Alain Prost became the second repeat winner after his first victory in 1988.

The race falling off the calendar from 1971 until 1985 and again between 1993 and 2014 is a major reason behind its lack of repeat winners. Plenty of drivers from a host of nationalities have won the Mexican GP, though, including from America, Belgium, Italy and New Zealand.
