Which F1 drivers do well at Hungarian Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton successful in Budapest

Formula 1 has visited Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986 and has seen 10 drivers secure multiple wins, so F1 Oversteer looks into its most successful drivers.

It only took two visits to the Hungaroring for Formula 1 to crown a repeat winner of the first race behind the Iron Curtain. Back-to-back wins with Williams saw Nelson Piquet Sr record a terrific start to the history of the Hungarian GP before Ayrton Senna claimed his first victory.

Senna would even eclipse his Brazilian compatriot Piquet Sr as the most successful driver at the Hungarian GP with two further wins in the 1990s. But he, too, has fallen down the order in the years that followed. A host of drivers have joined Piquet Sr as a two-time winner, too.

But no one can hold a candle to Lewis Hamilton as Formula 1’s most successful driver at the Hungarian GP. The Briton stands head and shoulders clear of his peers with eight wins so far at the tight and twisty track around 15 miles outside of Budapest in the village of Mogyorod.

Hamilton registered his first Hungarian Grand Prix victory whilst driving for McLaren back in his rookie season in 2007. He adopted pole position amidst the controversy which engulfed McLaren during qualifying after teammate Fernando Alonso blocked Hamilton in the pit box.

Kimi Raikkonen hounded Hamilton throughout the 2007 Hungarian GP to ensure the Briton did not claim an easy win, though. The Finn finished a meagre 0.715 seconds from his title rival at the Hungaroring as the Ferrari F2007 coped better in race conditions than qualifying.

Hamilton would go on to win the Hungarian GP twice more with McLaren in 2009 and 2012. The Hungaroring then witnessed the Stevenage-born star’s first win with Mercedes in 2013, for whom Hamilton secured four further victories thanks to the turbo-hybrid era since 2014.

His eight wins at the Hungaroring – the only circuit to hold the race – put Hamilton in a class of his own as the most successful Formula 1 driver at the Hungarian GP so far. Only Michael Schumacher has also won it more than three times across his spells at Benetton and Ferrari.

Schumacher never won the Hungarian GP in successive seasons after winning with Benetton in 1994 before taking three in seven years with Ferrari from 1998 to 2004. But his later wins with the Scuderia moved the German clear of Senna as the standard setter before Hamilton.
