What F1 teams do well at Singapore Grand Prix with Mercedes and Ferrari successful at Marina Bay

The Singapore Grand Prix has seen Formula 1 teams taste success around Marina Bay since 2008, so F1 Oversteer has taken a look into what crews are the most successful.

Only a handful of Formula 1 teams have ever won the Singapore Grand Prix since the series held its first-ever night race almost 20 years ago. Most teams have also not needed to bring the series into dispute by creating controversy like Renault did to win the inaugural edition.

Fernando Alonso handed Renault glory when F1 staged the maiden Singapore Grand Prix in 2008. But the Spaniard only did so as his teammate, Nelson Piquet Jr, intentionally crashed exiting Turn 17 to trigger a safety car period one lap after Alonso had made his sole pit stop.

Renault won the first Singapore GP with Fernando Alonso in 2008 due to Crashgate

The safety car period Piquet Jr’s shunt created shuffled Alonso to the front of the field with most other Formula 1 teams opting to pit. But while Renault and Alonso kept the win in the record books, the fallout of Crashgate saw the FIA strive to clamp down on the controversy.

Renault’s at-the-time team principal, Flavio Briatore, received a lifetime ban from Formula 1 after he, Piquet Jr and engineering director Pat Symonds conspired alone to create a way for Alonso to win the 2008 Singapore GP. France’s high court overturned Briatore’s ban in 2010.

Briatore and Symonds worked with Piquet Jr – who escaped any punishment after bringing Crashgate to the FIA’s attention in 2009 – as Alonso had not made a podium, let alone won any Grand Prix, in 2008 before going to the Singapore GP in his first term back at the team.

Their actions worked for Alonso to win the inaugural edition of the race. Yet 2008 proved to be the only time that Renault won a Singapore Grand Prix as an F1 constructor. The Enstone outfit failed to win on the streets of Marina Bay as Lotus (2011-2015) or Alpine (since 2021).

Mercedes are the most successful F1 team at the Singapore Grand Prix with five wins

While Renault did not build on winning the first Singapore Grand Prix in 2008, Formula 1 has so far seen four teams secure multiple wins. Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are all the joint-most successful yet, having each won the Singapore GP four times to McLaren with just two.

Alonso also gave Ferrari their first Singapore Grand Prix win in 2010 in far less controversial circumstances than with Renault two years earlier. The Spaniard penned a hat-trick in 2010 by winning from pole and setting the fastest lap, yet only won by 0.293s to Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel, meanwhile, gifted Red Bull their first win at a Formula 1 Singapore GP in 2011 as the German converted pole to beat McLaren’s Jenson Button by 1.737s. Another Briton in Lewis Hamilton gave McLaren their first Singapore GP win in 2009 and later even Mercedes’ first.

The Silver Arrows became the most successful constructor in Singapore Grand Prix history in 2025, after George Russell took the chequered flag first for the fifth time overall in his career.

Mercedes are the most successful engine manufacturer at the Singapore GP

Thanks to the success that Hamilton and Nico Rosberg delivered Mercedes at the Singapore Grand Prix, the Silver Arrows are also Formula 1’s most successful engine manufacturer yet at Marina Bay. Mercedes’ Brixworth engine facility has powered seven Singapore GP winners.

Ferrari and Renault are hot on Mercedes’ heels, however, having seen their engines secure four Singapore GP wins each so far. But Renault last powered a winning driver when Vettel drove for Red Bull, who even won with a Honda engine badged as a Red Bull unit in 2022.
