Williams’ Alex Albon thinks 22-year-old F1 rival ‘doesn’t get the credit’ he deserves

Alex Albon thinks his Williams teammate, Logan Sargeant, does not ‘get the credit’ the American deserves as the rookie continues to fight for his future on the Formula 1 grid.

The 22-year-old has endured an often frustrating first season as a Formula 1 driver. Sargeant remains the sole full-time driver still without a single point after 17 rounds. His best finish in the pinnacle of motorsport is a P11 result during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in July.

Sargeant later reached Q3 in qualifying for the first time at the Dutch GP in August. But that high quickly turned into a low after crashing without setting a flying lap after drifting onto a damper line. He also retired from the race with a hydraulics failure after a strike with a kerb.

Sargeant is fighting for his future in Formula 1 with Williams

Two of the four Grand Prix since F1 raced at Zandvoort have seen Sargeant retire, as well. He retired from the Japanese GP after contact with Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas after locking up into Turn 11. Bottas attempted to overtake Sargeant around the outside despite the lock up.

Errors continued at the Qatar GP, too, as Sargeant spun off and beached his Williams during the Sprint and retired. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native then retired from the Grand Prix after suffering from heat stroke. Formula 1 drivers raced in extreme temperatures at Lusail.

Albon thinks Sargeant ‘doesn’t get the credit’ he deserves

Sargeant will now look to deliver improved results and show Williams why he deserves their seat beside Albon again in 2024 at this weekend’s United States GP. Team principal James Vowles has said that Williams are unlikely to decide Sergeant’s future until the season ends.

Williams brought Sargeant into Formula 1 after a promising rookie season in Formula 2 over 2022. He stepped up to F1’s feeder series after joining the Grove squads’ driver academy in October 2021. Sargeant finished the year fourth in the standings having also won two races.

But the errors Sargeant has made in Formula 1 have masked the potential the American has shown Albon at Williams. While your teammate is your first rival, Albon believes Sargeant is going under the radar. He also feels the American has the skill to secure his spot on the grid.

“I can see his performance,” Albon said, via quotes by F1i.com. “I do think he doesn’t get the credit that he deserves. There is a lot of speed and talent within Logan. I think it’s just been a little bit offset with a couple of mistakes that he’s had.

“But I get on very well with him and I think he just needs a bit more time and confidence and he’ll get up there.”
