Liam Lawson’s United States Grand Prix performance was justification that the Red Bull hierarchy made the right decision to promote him to Formula 1.

The only problem is, that they could have done it a whole lot sooner, especially considering his stellar results as a stand-in last year.

Visa Cash App RB are in the midst of a dogfight for sixth in the constructors’ championship with Haas, who overtook them at the weekend.

However, they did manage to secure some solid points with Lawson for the first time in a while, and their car looks set to be in a good position to compete for the rest of the year.

Peter Bayer delighted with Liam Lawson’s ‘excellent work’ for RB

It’s in everyone’s best interests down at VCARB for Lawson to maximise his return across the rest of the season.

Not only may it secure his Italian team more prize money ahead of the 2025 season, but it may also earn him a promotion to Red Bull.

Sergio Perez has endured a dogged year to date, and Helmut Marko’s decision to apply some pressure on the Mexican by placing Lawson in the wings has pleased Peter Bayer.

“I was just downstairs to Helmut Marko, and I thanked him for his excellent work and of course the pressure he put on us to create a place for young talent,” he told ServusTV.

“At the same time, he was incredibly fast yesterday as Liam of course benefitted a little from it today that we started on the hard tyre and that the overcut was much stronger than we expected.”

Why it won’t be all too easy for Lawson in Red Bull fight

Lawson isn’t the only man competing for a promotion to Red Bull, with his teammate Yuki Tsunoda also in the picture.

The Japanese driver has led the team over the past few seasons and delivered some excellent performances.

However, he’s not heralded as the front-runner for a move to line up alongside Max Verstappen in the future, and his United States Grand Prix may have been an indication of why.

A silly spin at turn one in the middle of the race cost him a chance at points and pushed Lawson into the spotlight after he started from 19th.

Considering that it was the Kiwi’s first race in over a year, it’s slightly embarrassing for Tsunoda and he will be hoping to avoid a repeat of that next time out in Mexico.
