Helmut Marko was one of the fundamental leaders of the Red Bull Racing operation in Formula 1, so F1 Oversteer has taken a look into everything that you need to know about the former advisor.
Famed as the godfather of the Red Bull driver development programme, Marko has worked for the parent Red Bull GmbH company since as far back as 1990. He then remained an integral cog in its Formula 1 interests through Red Bull since 2005 as its motorsport advisor until it was announced he would leave the team in 2026.
Marko has also played a role in the running of Red Bull’s second F1 team since 2006 when it bought Minardi and renamed them Toro Rosso. The Faenza outfit went on to be AlphaTauri, named after Red Bull’s fashion label, from 2020 to 2023 before becoming Visa Cash App RB.
Red Bull and Marko first came together in 1990 when the late Dietrich Mateschitz hired him to head up the Red Bull Junior Team. Marko and Mateschitz would share a close bond until the latter’s passing during 2022 with the former a trusted confidant for Red Bull’s co-owner.
Who is Helmut Marko’s greatest Red Bull Junior Team product to race in F1?
Helmut Marko raced in Formula 1 and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans
Motorsport has also been a key part of Marko’s life since his childhood dreaming about one day racing in Formula 1 – a dream he realised. He even grew up as a friend of Jochen Rindt, who went on to win the 1970 Formula 1 drivers’ championship while racing for Team Lotus.
Marko’s Grand Prix career was not successful but he went on to make a name for himself as a driver manager and a team owner. At one point, Marko managed Gerhard Berger and Karl Wendlinger. His RSM Marko team was even key for Marko one day uniting with Mateschitz.
The best days of Marko’s racing career came from entering the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he got a P3.0 class win on debut in 1970 in a Porsche 908/2LH. Marko also took an outright Le Mans victory in 1971 driving a Porsche 917K alongside Gijs van Lennep in the S5.0 class.
So, with that in mind, F1 Oversteer looks at everything that you need to know about Marko.
Who is Red Bull’s former motorsport advisor Helmut Marko?

Helmut Marko is the motorsport advisor to the Red Bull GmbH parent company, supporting the Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App RB teams. He was contracted only to the parent brand and not to either of its Formula 1 teams based in Milton Keynes, England and Faenza, Italy.
A prominent aspect of Marko’s position at Red Bull is to discover, sign and nurture the best and brightest young driver talents. Multiple Formula 1 drivers and two champions also owe their careers to Marko, with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen coming through Red Bull.
Christian Klien was the first driver out of the Red Bull Junior Team to graduate to Formula 1. The programme has since seen Vitantonio Liuzzi, Daniel Ricciardo, Daniil Kvyat, Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda also make the step up to drive in the pinnacle of motorsport.
Helmut Marko headed up the Red Bull Junior Team
Dietrich Mateschitz named Helmut Marko to lead the Red Bull Junior Team after taking over the latter’s RSM Marko squad which raced in Formula 3 and Formula 3000. Marko’s decision to use Opel engines also proved inspired to seeing Jorg Muller win the 1994 German F3 title.
Muller even won the Formula 3000 title with RSM Marko in 1996, but his championship win was engulfed in controversy. The race stewards for the season finale at Hockenheim faced claims of favouritism for disqualifying Kenny Brack from a title-winning P2 as Muller retired.
RSM Marko nearly won the Formula 3000 drivers’ championship again in 1997 as Juan Pablo Montoya finished second to Ricardo Zonta by 1.5 points. Spiralling costs then saw the squad skip 1998, but returned running as the Sauber Formula 3000 team under the Red Bull name.

What’s been said about Helmut Marko?

Max Verstappen is one of many drivers to voice their praise for Helmut Marko, even backing the Austrian during his internal power struggle with Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner in 2024. Marko’s place had become uncertain after the death of Dietrich Mateschitz.
“It’s very important that he stays within the team,” Verstappen said in March 2024 to signal his support for Marko staying with Red Bull. “If such an important pillar falls away, that’s not good for my situation, as well. So, for me, Helmut has to stay, for sure.”
Sebastian Vettel also sought advice from Marko in 2020 after the four-time Formula 1 world champion with Red Bull lost his drive at Ferrari. The German, who sealed 39 of his 53 Grand Prix wins with Red Bull, went on to stay on F1’s grid for two further years with Aston Martin.
“I asked Helmut Marko for advice,” Vettel explained in July 2020. “I presented him with the situation and he has the heart on his tongue. I’ve just been able to talk to him about it.”
After it was announced that Marko would stand down from his role within the Red Bull team at the end of the 2025 season, both Verstappen and the team’s other driver Yuki Tsunoda paid tribute to the Austrian.
Should Red Bull be worried about Verstappen’s future after Marko’s exit?

Helmut Marko only has sight in one eye
Racing in Formula 1 was always the dream as Helmut Marko made his name in motorsport. But that dream was dashed during the 1972 French Grand Prix at the Circuit de Charade in Clermont-Ferrand when a stone pierced through his visor and blinded Marko in his left eye.
Losing sight in one of his eyes further cost Marko a chance to race for Ferrari as he was set to join the Scuderia. “I had always dreamed of Formula 1 and was about to sign a contract with Ferrari,” Marko once noted. “And suddenly it was over. You then fall into a dark hole.”
Marko was 29 years old at the time he lost sight in his left eye and lost his dream of being a Formula 1 driver. So, he refocused on hotels as the Austrian’s father already owned a small Gasthaus, which Marko helped to completely renovate into what became Schlossberghotel.
