The Miami GP has been a showcase event on the Formula 1 calendar since 2022, so F1 Oversteer has looked at which drivers are the most successful at Hard Rock Stadium.

Very few drivers have tasted success on the streets and car parks that surround the home of the Miami Dolphins. Formula 1 and the organisers of the Miami GP have used the surrounds of the NFL outfit’s stadium to stage a Grand Prix in Florida since the race’s debut in 2022.

The Miami GP is even one of the select races left on the F1 calendar that seven-time drivers’ champion Lewis Hamilton has not won. He is also yet to stand on the top step of a podium at a Dutch GP after three trips to Zandvoort and a Las Vegas GP, which only debuted in 2023.

Max Verstappen is the most successful F1 driver at the Miami GP

Hamilton’s fierce rival Max Verstappen, meanwhile, is the most successful Formula 1 driver at the Miami Grand Prix. The Red Bull racer has won every time F1 has visited Florida so far. He beat Charles Leclerc to win the first Miami GP in 2022 and Sergio Perez in the race in 2023.

Verstappen also made Red Bull the most successful team at the Miami GP before he had any pole positions in Florida. The Dutchman won from P3 on the grid in 2022 after setting times slower than Ferrari teammates, Leclerc plus Carlos Sainz, during Q3 on Formula 1’s first visit.

Leclerc took the inaugural pole position at a Miami GP with a 1:28.796 lap. He beat Sainz by 0.190 seconds and by 0.195s to Verstappen. But the Monegasque struggled to maintain the life in his tyres compared to his Red Bull rival, who took the lead on Lap 9 of 57 and held on.

Verstappen even only qualified P9 in 2023 after Leclerc spun in Q3, ending the session early under the red flags. The Dutchman had aborted his initial Q3 run after a snap at Turn 5. But he shattered pole-sitter Perez’s spirits to win the Miami GP in 2023 after managing his tyres.

The Miami Grand Prix has seen one repeat winner

Verstappen winning the Miami GP in 2022 and 2023 makes the Red Bull racer the only driver with repeat wins at Hard Rock Stadium to date. He even nearly secured a hat-trick but Lando Norris won his first F1 race at the 2024 Miami GP after passing Verstappen under a safety car.

The Dutchman did score his first pole position at the Miami Grand Prix in 2024, however, as Verstappen continued his and Red Bull’s dominant start to the season in qualifying. He took pole position at each of the opening seven rounds, including in Miami by 0.141s to Leclerc.
