What ‘sources’ are saying about Jack Doohan’s chances of driving for Alpine in 2025

Alpine are going to be one of the most interesting teams to follow after the Formula 1 summer break but not necessarily for what they could achieve on track.

With 10 race weekends left this season, Alpine will be hoping they can close the gap to Haas and RB in the Constructors’ Championship and avoid falling even further down the pecking order.

However, an awful lot is going on behind the scenes at Alpine especially since Flavio Briatore has been brought in by Renault CEO Luca de Meo as an executive advisor.

Bruno Famin has already been moved on as team principal and replaced by Hitech chief Oliver Oakes.

Renault are also thinking about abandoning their power unit project, meaning Alpine would become a customer team potentially as soon as 2025.

Alpine’s senior staff have plenty to focus on over the coming weeks and months and one decision they need to make soon is on next year’s driver line-up.

Pierre Gasly is already signed up for next season and beyond but Esteban Ocon will be moving on at the end of the year to join Haas.

Speaking on the F1 Nation Podcast, journalists Tom Clarkson and Erik van Haren were talking about the driver who could be his replacement.

Jack Doohan has become a familiar figure in the Formula 1 paddock this year.

He’s a regular guest on F1’s official media channels after races and has already taken part in two FP1 sessions for the team this year.

There’s now a suggestion that he could be closing in on securing that second Alpine seat and making his full debut next year.

Reflecting on the few remaining seats on the grid for next year, Clarkson said: “Just while we’re talking the driver market Alpine, there’s one seat available. My sources are saying, Jack Doohan.”

Van Haren replied: “That’s what I heard as well.

“So, I think for Jack Doohan, I think he was popping some champagne, I don’t know if he drinks but when he heard that Carlos definitely went to Williams because I think that was it only serious competitor for that seat, is what I heard.

“So, I think they will announce that soon. But also with Formula One the teams they are in contact [with]. They want to spread the news a bit right.

“They might want to announce maybe that Jack [will sign] next week or I don’t know before this week before the race or next week before the Monza race.

“Then Antonelli will be for the Monza race because it’s Italy. So, they always are in contact.”

Damon Hill has backed Jack Doohan to be in Formula 1 next year

The F1 driver market was in a very volatile place a few months ago with so many drivers out of contract for 2025.

However, that has settled down now with Carlos Sainz confirming at the beginning of the summer break that he would move to Williams and Red Bull not making any changes to their line-up ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.

Only four available seats remain with RB yet to decide Daniel Ricciardo’s fate and Mercedes almost certainly set to hand Kimi Antonelli a remarkable F1 debut next year.

It means Alpine is still a very interesting prospect for any current drivers who have lost their seats such as Zhou Guanyu.

Zhou has admitted holding talks with rival teams, but Doohan appears to be Alpine’s man.

Damon Hill believes Doohan will be driving for Alpine next year but all eyes are on their rivals RB to see whether he’ll be the second or third Australian on the grid next year.
