Oscar Piastri gave his verdict on the collision between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez that effectively ended the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Both Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez were battling on the penultimate lap of the race when they collided coming out of Turn 2, causing both to crash into the barrier and retire from the race.

Sainz had closed on the three-way battle for the lead in the final laps and was helped by Charles Leclerc’s tyres dropping off in performance before they made contact fighting for third.

Both Sainz and Perez are being investigated after the race by the stewards for causing a collision.

Race winner Oscar Piastri was watching back the collision in the podium cool-down room when he made a quip regarding Perez and Sainz throughout the weekend.

Both Sainz and Perez were on the receiving end of an investigation between the FIA stewards following FP3 on Saturday after the Red Bull driver had to take avoiding action against Sainz when starting a hot lap.

Sainz was handed a warning for the incident by the stewards, while Perez was less than happy over team radio when he exclaimed: “What is he doing?! That was very close!”

While watching over the incident in the podium cool-down room at the end of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Piastri gave his verdict on the pair.

“Tell you what, they’ve not been great friends this weekend. I think that’s the third time they’ve [nearly hit each other] now they’ve finished the job!”

Red Bull loses Constructors’ lead to McLaren

The crash between Perez and Sainz meant that Red Bull lost out on a potential 18 points in the Constructors’ battle and enabled McLaren to score an extra four points with Lando Norris.

Norris was promoted to fourth and with Piastri’s win, it enabled McLaren to overtake Red Bull by 20 points.

It is the first time McLaren has led the Constructors’ Championship since 2014, as they look to win their first title since the 1998 season.

Having emerged as the highest points scorers in the last six races, McLaren look to be well on the way to taking at least one title away from Red Bull in 2024.
