Max Verstappen suffered a late DNF from the British Grand Prix, and it seemed to prompt a meeting between Red Bull and his management.
Speculation has been rife about the four-time champion’s future all season. Verstappen is free to leave Red Bull in 2026 if he is not in the top two or three of the standings by the end of the year.
Verstappen was heavily linked with McLaren over the Austrian GP weekend. Mercedes looks off the table for him, as George Russell and Kimi Antonelli seem locked in for 2027, but the Dutchman is clearly considering his options.

The 28-year-old struggled throughout the British Grand Prix weekend. He finished sixth in the Sprint after having difficulty navigating through the field.
David Coulthard was surprised by Verstappen’s poor racecraft in the Sprint as he lost numerous positions throughout the race. In the end, Verstappen was beaten by teammate Isack Hadjar, and things did not improve on Sunday.

The Red Bull driver was complaining about the battery deployment and his tyres before he spun off in the final laps at Stowe. Verstappen was beached in the gravel and was forced to retire, with the race ending under the safety car.
Verstappen will not be pleased with the weekend, and it does not paint a good picture for Red Bull and their chances of keeping him.
That is made evident by what was seen after the race in the paddock. Journalist Luke Smith, via X (formerly Twitter), captured a picture of Laurent Mekies meeting with Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen.

His father, Jos Verstappen, was also present, with the former F1 driver playing a huge role in his son’s career and future moves.
It is currently unclear what the meeting was about, but given all the speculation and Verstappen’s frustration with the regulations, the rumours around his future will certainly ramp up again.
