Franco Colapinto has impressed since he replaced American Logan Sargeant, so much that he was seen joking with Fernando Alonso after the US Grand Prix.

The Argentine managed to score points for a second time and battled with other cars usually quicker than Williams, including Alonso who was suffering from a difficult race.

Colapinto briefly held the point for the fastest lap after pitting late for a set of medium tyres, which would have bagged him an extra point.

Instead, Alpine elected to pit Esteban Ocon in the closing stages, snatching it away to prevent Williams from extending their lead over the French outfit in the Constructors’ Championship.

Colapinto had overtaken Alonso 23 laps into the race for P10 with an aggressive move up the inside into Turn 12.

Alonso tried to get the undercut at the next sequence of corners, but Colapinto managed to fend him off and retain the position. The pair joked about the move when speaking to the media in the TV pen after the race.

“It’s the position I should have given myself in Monza,” Franco told him with a laugh.

“Today there was no fight. He was going a second faster than us. The Williams is the new McLaren of the middle zone,” said Alonso.

While a battle over seventh might not be as enthralling as the three-way title race between Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari, it is still worth millions of dollars in prize money.

Williams currently sits three points ahead of Alpine in the championship battle and looks set to continue if Colapinto can keep achieving points finishes.
