The British Grand Prix was somewhat overshadowed by a late controversy as the race unexpectedly finished behind the safety car.
After Red Bull driver Max Verstappen spun off and became stuck in the gravel trap at Stowe on lap 48, the safety car was deployed.
It was unclear whether there was enough time to restart the race, but race control initially announced that the safety car would come in at the end of lap 51, allowing for one more racing lap after the lapped cars were allowed to overtake.

David Croft saw fans leaving after Silverstone safety car controversy
Amid the confusion, some of the fans, who had been promised an epic sprint to the finish, started booing in the grandstands. That’s according to David Croft.
Sky Sports F1 commentator Croft also saw fans leaving their seats before the finish after a weekend that had broken F1’s attendance record.
“I’m hearing booing from the fans on this one,” he said. “I can see some fans actually streaming away from the grandstands already. It’s been such a brilliant weekend here at Silverstone.
“But the one thing you just can’t predict, because it’s live sport, the one thing that we’re all here to see is giving us the dampest of damp squibs.”
The u-turn allowed Charles Leclerc to cruise over the line, with George Russell finishing second. Lewis Hamilton was one of the biggest losers, denied the opportunity to re-pass Russell after deciding to pit for fresh tyres.
Ferrari took a gamble bringing Hamilton in with so few laps remaining, and he came out just behind Russell.
Leclerc, who was over 20 seconds clear before the safety car, said it wasn’t the finish he dreamed of, but admitted feeling relieved that he didn’t have to defend his lead.
