George Russell pipped Lewis Hamilton to pole position by just 0.064s at the Barcelona Grand Prix, with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff being surprised at such a fine margin.
The seven-time world champion will now line up alongside his former teammate for Sunday’s Grand Prix, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli starting in the slipstream of his title rivals in P3.
George Russell on pole, with Kimi Antonelli off the front row for the first time in 2026 😮💨 Who was the biggest surprise in qualifying in Barcelona?
The result came as quite a surprise to the Austrian executive due to the fact that it was the closest Ferrari has been to the Mercedes all weekend. Ferrari began the first practice session over half a second behind Russell’s initial benchmark.
Unfortunately for the Scuderia, they will have just the one car duking it out at the front of the pack at the beginning of the Barcelona Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc suffered yet another qualifying crash in Q3 and will start from P10.

Toto Wolff shares theory on Ferrari’s bounce back in Barcelona GP qualifying
During F1TV’s post-qualifying show, Toto Wolff was asked for his thoughts on Ferrari’s ability to throw their name into the hat for pole position. According to the team principal, Mercedes’ data suggested there would still be a sizeable margin.
Ferrari have brought a major eight-part upgrade package to Barcelona, but where does the team most need to improve?
“Yeah, our calculations showed they were half a second off over a single lap,” he told hosts James Hinchcliffe and Juan Pablo Montoya. “Here, they rebounded, and I guess their upgrade is working.
“Maybe they were running a bit heavier than us in the previous sessions, so we’re going to fasten our seatbelts because that upgrade was massive. At the moment, in cost-cap land, we can’t afford to do that. So yeah, they are proper, proper challengers.”
As alluded to by Wolff, Ferrari brought a big upgrade package to the Montmelo-based circuit in hopes of bridging the gap that Mercedes have built over the first six rounds of the current campaign.
One of the biggest aspects of the SF-26 that needed amending was the front wing. The first iteration of upgrades at the Miami GP missed the mark, but early indications suggest that it has now been corrected for this weekend’s round of racing.

Toto Wolff is predicting ‘more grey hair’ for himself ahead of Mercedes’ battle in Barcelona
Of course, with Russell and Antonelli starting at close proximity once again this weekend, it begs the question of whether Wolff will implement any team orders on their drivers.
With Hamilton starting from P2, he could certainly prove to be a thorn in the Silver Arrows’ side if they start to trip each other up.
However, Wolff is keeping the same ethos he has maintained throughout 2026, saying, “They’re racing for a championship, and Kimi will want to show that he is the one, and George also wants a good result to say, ‘I’m the one, don’t discount me’.
“Lewis, obviously, is in such a good frame of mind that he is going for the win, so I don’t know how this is going to pan out tomorrow.
“For me, the primary thing is no contact. But, yeah, starting behind each other, Kimi is going to have a good slipstream, so more grey hair for me.”
