George Russell faces a mountain to climb in order to get himself back into the title fight against Kimi Antonelli this year, and it has been reported that his future at Mercedes may now be in ‘question’ following his disappointing Monaco Grand Prix.
After failing to score points at the previous round of racing in Montreal, George Russell’s title hopes took another hit as a penalty-ridden Monaco Grand Prix saw him finish outside the top 10 in the final classification once more.

The struggling Briton now sits 68 points adrift of Kimi Antonelli in the F1 standings, with the 19-year-old’s lead in the drivers’ championship setting a new record for the biggest advantage after six rounds of racing.
Russell’s excuse of the car being more suited to Antonelli has been rejected by figures within the F1 paddock, with it now being reported that the six-time Grand Prix winner’s poor form has sent alarm bells ringing in the head of Mercedes chief Toto Wolff.
Toto Wolff now has ‘question marks’ over George Russell’s future at Mercedes
During a post-Monaco Grand Prix episode of the F1 Insider podcast, journalist Bianca Garloff shed some light on the current situation involving Wolff’s two drivers.

“Anyone who racks up five wins in a row, whether in a dominant car or not, is simply something special, and George Russell sees that too,” she said. “He’ll also feel the pressure Mercedes is putting on him.
“There are also those question marks in Toto Wolff’s mind as to whether George Russell is still the right man for the job as co-pilot to the star driver, Antonelli.”
Russell reportedly signed a one-year extension to his current Mercedes contract towards the latter stages of the 2025 campaign last year, which means that his deal with the Brackley-based outfit will expire at the end of 2026.
He is also reported to have a performance-related clause to trigger an extra year for 2027. However, Russell’s clause could potentially be made void if Antonelli finishes the season above him in the championship standings.
George Russell looked ‘deeply concerned’ amid Kimi Antonelli’s dominance at Monaco
It was a very troubling race weekend all around for Russell in Monte Carlo, with his younger teammate having a pace advantage over him from the very first Free Practice session.
As such, Russell’s troubled demeanour was plain to see for everyone present in the paddock. Garloff highlighted this later in her comments on the Briton.
She added, “Anyone who watched Russell this weekend in Monaco, on both Saturday and Sunday, saw a driver who is deeply troubled.
“He’s lacking confidence; you can really see that in Russell, and getting out of this slump, up against his own team-mate who now has this massive points lead, who’s simply on a roll, and for whom everything is going right.”
