Lewis Hamilton’s former F1 rival, Timo Glock, has revealed his surprise at how hard the seven-time world champion actually works behind the scenes despite being “written off” at the height of his woes at Ferrari.

Of course, becoming one of the most successful drivers to ever compete in the pinnacle of single-seater motorsports doesn’t happen without a bit of hard work, but Lewis Hamilton’s work ethic has been called into question since his move to Maranello at the start of 2025.

Confirmation of his switch to Ferrari machinery brought with it a multitude of comparisons to F1’s only other seven-time world champion: Michael Schumacher.

The F1 legend was widely regarded as one of the hardest-working drivers the sport has ever seen, but an engineer who has been lucky enough to work with both noted that Hamilton isn’t the same “workaholic” as Schumacher.

Hamilton proved a swathe of his critics wrong at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he began the weekend under scrutiny after voicing his tendency to snub simulator work in favour of putting his instincts to use on race weekends.

He ended up securing his best result to date for Ferrari that weekend, before Hamilton one-upped himself two rounds later by securing a famous maiden victory in red at the Barcelona Grand Prix.

“You have to say: hats off to Lewis Hamilton for the way he fought his way back from last year’s slump,” Timo Glock told Austrian newspaper Heute.

“Everyone had written him off, and everyone was saying it was all over and that he wouldn’t be able to make the move to Ferrari work. In my opinion, he’s done an outstanding job of that, and the new cars seem to suit him.”

For Glock, who inadvertently became a key figure in the Briton’s maiden world championship back in 2008, he has absolutely no issues with Hamilton’s work ethic, adding, “You can also see how hard he works to prepare; it feels like you see a photo of him at the gym every day.”

Behind the scenes at Ferrari, engineers have been mightily impressed with the level of determination Hamilton has shown so far at the iconic Italian racing outfit as he continues the hunt for an elusive eighth world championship.
