The role Fernando Alonso wants in 2027 at the end of his current Aston Martin contract

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso appears to have been entering the twilight of his Formula 1 career for some time now.

When Fernando Alonso stepped away from the McLaren F1 team at the end of the 2018 season, he was already 37 years old.

At that age, many drivers decide enough is enough and hang up their racing boots.

Not Alonso though, who went on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship, take part in the Dakar Rally and attempt to win the Indy 500.

After achieving all of that, Alonso was then offered a way back into Formula 1 by his old team Renault, now under the name Alpine.

Two seasons and a single podium later, Alonso took the next step on his F1 journey with Aston Martin and this year, he signed a contract extension that guarantees his place on the grid until 2026.

Alonso immediately impressed Aston Martin when he joined the team and can look forward to Adrian Newey’s imminent arrival.

A report from F1 Insider has now listed Alonso’s preferred options for 2027 and beyond when his current deal expires.

Alonso will be 45 at the end of the 2026 campaign when Aston Martin hope they’ll be challenging for race victories and potentially even the championship.

The Spaniard is holding on for that reason with Aston Martin currently performing well beyond expectations.

If they’re as competitive as he and many within the team hope they’ll be, there’s no guarantee that Alonso has already signed his final racing contract.

Fernando Alonso eyeing racing or management role in 2027 and beyond

Team principal Mike Krack has admitted that McLaren have the blueprint to copy right now after their rapid ascent from the back to the front of the grid.

With the likes of Newey, Enrico Cardile, Dan Fallows and Andy Cowell all working together at Aston Martin going forward, they’ll be expected to deliver a similar trajectory.

Alonso is Aston Martin’s star driver and can afford to take his time with his next steps knowing that he’s got the advantage over teammate Lance Stroll.

The report states that Alonso ‘wants to stay’ at Aston Martin in 2027 and beyond, either in a team manager role or continuing as a driver.

However, that’s not necessarily in Formula 1 and will likely depend on how well the team are competing within the new regulations.

If he doesn’t stay in F1, Alonso would like to be involved in their Le Mans prototype program.

Who are the oldest drivers to win a Formula 1 race?

Fernando Alonso has been stuck on 32 Formula 1 race wins for more than a decade now.

He last stood on the top step of the podium at his home race in Spain in 2013, where he was joined on the podium by Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa, Nico Rosberg was on pole position and Esteban Gutierrez secured the fastest lap.

All four of those drivers have now left F1, and only Sergio Perez, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are still on the grid who raced that day after Daniel Ricciardo was replaced following the Singapore Grand Prix.

Were Alonso to win the upcoming United States Grand Prix, it would make him the sixth oldest driver ever to win an F1 race.

Three-time world champion Jack Brabham and legendary driver Juan Manuel Fangio would both still sit above him in the rankings alongside a trio of Italians: Piero Taruffi, Giuseppe Farina and record-holder Luigi Fagioli.

When Fagioli won the 1951 French Grand Prix, he was 53 years and 22 days old, having been born in 1898.

Alonso would need to continue extending his Aston Martin contract to the 2034 season to attempt to match that record, which even by his standards, seems incredibly unlikely.
