Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso has claimed that the qualifying format in Formula One is in desperate need of a change.
He told Autosport that he believes things should instead work based off a single lap qualifying format, replacing the current Q1 to Q3 one that has been in place for some time.
Alonso has seen his season begin to tail off slightly after what had been an extremely strong start to the year.

In the opening races, he was the clear best of the rest behind the rocketship Red Bull, frequently finding himself on the podium.
Despite being a regular in Q3, the top three finishes have dried up as teams like McLaren and Mercedes have improved greatly.
Fernando Alonso on change he would make to Formula One
However, the Spaniard has made his thoughts known on the qualifying format currently in place, saying it requires a change.
He said: “They have a very difficult job in terms of managing traffic on street circuits and all the other things like that.

“As I have said several times, there is only one way to find a solution, and that is qualification in one round. Every other solution we can try will never work, because we will always find a way around them.
“I think this qualifying format [existing format] is outdated. It’s been the same thing for 20 or 25 years and the cars are not the same as 20 or 25 years ago. We have hybrid engines, we have to load, unload, cool the tyres. So the only way to move forward is to do a single lap.”
The single lap qualification would certainly bring more excitement to supporters, with the pressure on each driver matching that of a real race on a Sunday.
