Kimi Antonelli’s FP3 crash is a sign that, despite his success at the Australian Grand Prix, he still has to address some key mistakes.

Antonelli’s weekend improved drastically after a disastrous crash in FP3, as he went on to secure P2 in qualifying and finished the race second behind his Mercedes teammate, George Russell.

It was an excellent performance from the young driver, but the race started out as an absolute disaster. Kimi Antonelli lost several positions due to a poor start in the race, only to make it up later.

After the race, Martin Brundle warned Russell of Antonelli’s emergence, as the second-year driver looked like he could put some pressure on his teammate later in the season.

Perhaps Ted Kravitz will take up this issue with Brundle later, as he believes Antonelli is still making some big mistakes on the track.

Ted Kravitz believes Kimi Antonelli’s mistakes could jeopardise title challenge against George Russell

Ted Kravitz addressed Kimi Antonelli’s chances of competing with George Russell for a world championship this season, admitting that he was sceptical about the idea.

Kravitz pointed to Antonelli’s mistakes, particularly his crash in FP3, as evidence that the young driver has a lot to learn. Despite him not being ready to compete for a title, he expects Antonelli to give it a shot anyway.

“Kimi needs to stop the crashes. That will affect him. Maybe he’ll take it a little bit easier in crucial times. FP3, to have a crash then, it’s not a crucial time, there’s no competitive advantage being super quick in FP3.”

“He’s still on a learning curve. It’s only his second year in Formula 1. George is absolutely ready to build on a world championship. Maybe the biggest fight will come from his own team.”

“Maybe Kimi Antonelli just knows that in his second year, maybe it’s too big an ask to challenge him for a championship. But that won’t stop him. He’ll give it a go.”

True or false: Kimi Antonelli proved he can fight for the 2026 F1 title with his recovery in qualifying for the Australian GP?

Kimi Antonelli cannot let title aspirations derail improvement in second F1 season

For a young driver like Kimi Antonelli, a performance like he had over the weekend will be hard to ignore when it comes to evaluating yourself.

However, as things stand, Antonelli must have some perspective and understand that a strong performance in the opening race isn’t a sign that you can compete for the world championship.

That isn’t to say that he should be devoid of ambition this season. Rather, Antonelli should put in the work and do his best to help the team for now.

Come the end of the season, if he finds himself in a position to make a push for the championship, he should try to do so. But for now, his goal must remain the same – to continue to improve in his second season.
