Sky Sports F1 presenter Simon Lazenby has shared what Red Bull Racing staff were telling him after the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Red Bull may have some issues off the track right now but they’re already opening up a lead over Ferrari and Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship.

Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 Podcast, Lazenberg was discussing how Red Bull fared during the opening race of the season.

Red Bull turned up to pre-season with a car that shocked many fans given how different it was to their incredible 2023 machine.

However, Max Verstappen was a second clear of the rest of the field on the opening day in Bahrain and carried that form into the race weekend itself.

He probably shouldn’t have qualified on pole if Charles Leclerc had hooked up his fastest lap in Q3, but once he exited turn one in first place, he was never being caught.

Sergio Perez had a tougher time on Friday but had little trouble working his way from fifth to second, but still finished 20 seconds behind his teammate.

Lazenby had a conversation with several Red Bull staff after the race in Bahrain and shared their feelings following an impressive one-two.

With Max Verstappen’s future suddenly a point of discussion when it hadn’t been before, there might be a sense of nervousness within the group.

Despite the good result, David Coulthard wasn’t overly impressed with the Dutchman’s teammate either.

Red Bull still dominating rivals on the track

Speaking about the race, Lazenby said: “I mean Adrian Newey is quite good is what I’ve learned this weekend and I think that that car is possibly better than last year’s car. In fact, it’s definitely better than last year’s car.

“I think the others are going to have to be on absolutely top form on any given weekend to have any chance of beating that RB20, it’s amazing.

“It’s just a piece of art, it looks like a fighter jet, we’ve been saying it all weekend and I think he’s done it again.

“I was talking to a few people from Red Bull on Saturday night, Sunday and they were just, ‘Yeah, this is very, very, very good’.”

Lazenby’s conversation with Red Bull employees in Bahrain will be of little consolation to their rivals.

Ferrari would have been pleased with Carlos Sainz’s performance but Charles Leclerc’s brake issues would have been very frustrating.

Mercedes have a decent car as well but the cooling issues they suffered stopped them from seriously challenging.

It will be fascinating to see if they can both fix those problems in Saudi Arabia this weekend.
