Liam Lawson had about as miserable a start to the 2025 Formula 1 season as he could have had with Red Bull.

When he returned to Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, it took him some time to find his feet again and get back to his true pace.

Lawson’s results heading into the Formula 1 summer break suggested that he’s really starting to build some momentum again.

Whether or not it’s too late to be in with a chance of a drive at Red Bull again for 2026 is unknown, but he has at least proven to them that he remains top-flight material.

Lawson admitted he was ‘naive’ about Red Bull and expected them to give him more time to adjust to their car.

Even a Racing Bulls boss hates to say one thing about Lawson, who thinks that he encountered some bad luck after his promotion to the senior team over the winter.

Red Bull will love the ‘change’ in approach Liam Lawson has made ahead of 2026

Lawson may have one advantage over Isack Hadjar if Red Bull do go ahead and drop Yuki Tsunoda for next year, who has struggled a lot too in their second seat.

Over the last four races, he has picked up a phenomenal 14 points, which have helped to keep his team eighth in the constructors’ championship.

In a way, he’s pulling his weight more than he ever has, and it should earn him some plaudits for the future.

Speaking to RacingNews365, the Kiwi discussed how his approach hasn’t altered much from the start of the year, but that ‘change’ can happen fast. Being adaptable is what Red Bull will love to hear.

“But things change very, very quickly,” he said. “So I think the approach for me stays the same as it has been for most of the season.

“It’s very, very close and competitive. For me, it’s just extracting everything out of me, but I feel comfortable in the car.”

Where will Liam Lawson end up for the 2026 Formula 1 season?

At one stage, it looked as though Lawson’s future was under threat, with failure to find any form upon his return to Racing Bulls.

But, he stuck at it and now looks set to be alongside either Hadjar or Arvid Lindblad for the 2026 season with his current team.

There’s a small chance on current form that he could land himself a seat at Red Bull again, but he would need to score a lot of points for that to be a possibility.

Red Bull are set to make a 2026 Lawson decision, and at the age of 23, he still has plenty of time to develop in a cockpit.

It’s easy to forget how young and raw his talents are. With time, he could yet blossom into an excellent driver, and one capable of competing with the Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc-like characters.
