Red Bull told the only Sergio Perez alternative who could survive as Max Verstappen’s teammate

Red Bull faces the prospect of needing to replace Sergio Perez at the end of the season as they look on course to lose the Constructors’ Championship.

Perez is currently eighth in the Drivers’ Championship and over 100 points behind teammate Max Verstappen, while Red Bull has now slipped behind Ferrari in the Constructors’ following a non-finish for the Mexican at his home race.

The Mexico City GP was a disaster for Perez, not least because he qualified at the back of the grid, but because he collided with Liam Lawson and caused significant damage to his RB20.

Lawson is being tipped as a potential replacement if he can help Visa CashApp RB overtake Alpine in the battle for sixth, following their double podium in Brazil after lucking into a tyre strategy during the red flag.

Red Bull has also kept an eye on Franco Colapinto following his impressive run of races for Williams, one of which included him fending off Perez for a few laps in Singapore.

Discussing how they should proceed in future races on the RacingNews365 NL podcast, former racing driver Tom Coronel believes Red Bull should be considering another experienced driver to take over Perez.

Red Bull should replace Sergio Perez with Yuki Tsunoda

Red Bull is not short on driver talent in their stable, but one thing that a lot of the options lack is experience.

Going up against Verstappen, Coronel believes there is only one suitable option: “Yuki Tsunoda should be put in Red Bull. He simply has the most experience, everyone else will be beaten by Max. It just wouldn’t be smart and I understand everyone wants to see new heroes but it’s not going to work.

Tsunoda made his F1 debut in 2021 at AlphaTauri and had a rookie season that was characterized by crashes, but has since improved his form and scored 89 points in his career after effectively taking on the lead-driver role at the team.

He is contracted for 2025 to RB in a deal worth £800k-per-year and Red Bull could call on his services, however, the team has previously stated that they are not keen on him.

Aston Martin could hire Yuki Tsunoda over Lance Stroll

Aston Martin is set to link up with Honda as their power unit supplier from the 2026 season, with legendary designer Adrian Newey also set to join team from March next year.

Newey has a history of working with Honda from his days with Red Bull, in which he won three Drivers’ Championships and two Constructors’ with their engines.

Stroll is on a rolling contract but recent results could see Aston Martin move him on to other projects within the team, especially after Brazilian fans were heard chanting Felipe Drugovitch’s name when he crashed out on the formation lap in Sao Paulo.

A potential replacement for Stroll could be Tsunoda with the Japanese driver previously eyeing a future at Aston Martin given their links to Honda.
