Carlos Sainz has been linked with several seats on the F1 grid for next year’s campaign, and Ralf Schumacher has now revealed that he’s heard the Spaniard’s father, Carlos Sainz Sr, is ‘asking around’ for him regarding an exit from Williams.

The four-time Grand Prix winner has been rumoured to be on his way out of Williams following a disappointing start to the current campaign, which has been marred by chassis issues and broken promises.

Prior to him signing on at the Grove-based outfit, and following confirmation that he would be losing his seat at Ferrari for last year’s term, Sainz was reportedly weighing up his options between Williams and their midfield rivals, Audi (previously Sauber).

Team principal of the German constructor, Mattia Binotto, previously revealed that Sainz went against the wishes of his father in joining Williams, and the two-time rally world champion looks to have not given up the fight.

Ralf Schumacher reveals latest on Carlos Sainz’s future at Williams

In a recent episode of the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, F1 pundit Ralf Schumacher touched upon Sainz’s current standing on the grid, before he was asked by co-host Peter Hardenacke whether the Spaniard is still capable of leading a front-running team.

“Oh yes, I do think he’s capable of that,” the German replied. “He’s a very analytical driver, and he was like that even back in karting. I still remember that Mr Robazzi, the owner of Tony Kart, was always absolutely thrilled with him.

“He always used to say, ‘Look, he might not be the most naturally gifted driver, but with his hard work and his approach to the job, he knows exactly how to develop his talent to the full, make the most of it and, in some respects, even outperform the best.’

“And that’s why I believe that Carlos Sainz, in a good car, will definitely be able to compete for the world championship and lead a team as well. I’ll say it again: I think he’s capable of it. Perhaps he has some relatively good offers at the moment.

“I understand that he wants to leave Williams. I don’t think there’s much of a future for him there at the moment. I also believe – and I know James Vowles will hate me for saying this – but he’s showing that right now.”

Ahead of this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, Sainz detailed how he is currently working out Williams’ timeline, and whether when they want to be competitive matches his own aspirations. He will be turning 32 in September, so time is of the essence.

“When you consider that they have the Mercedes engine, you’d actually expect more from them,” Schumacher continued, before adding, “One has heard that Carlos Sainz [Sr] is asking around. His father is always very active in the paddock.

“He’s always on the go, knows everyone and their mother, and is really acting as his manager. That shows they’re already thinking about it. Perhaps they’ve even wrapped up that chapter, because they’re simply saying, ‘OK, that’s where we stand.’”
