Red Bull are now in a position where they have nothing to lose with Max Verstappen’s 2025 Formula 1 title bid.
From 49 points behind with three races to go, winning a drivers’ championship should be virtually impossible.
In fact, if Verstappen lets Lando Norris score at least nine more points than him at the next race in Las Vegas, then mathematically, the race is over for him.
Red Bull’s fightback has been inspiring, but ultimately, they started the season too poorly to sustain a strong enough charge. In all likelihood, they will fall short.
Verstappen sounded ‘clueless’ in a Brazilian Grand Prix interview and it began to look like even he was losing hope in his title charge. It wouldn’t be for the first time this year.
Although a Q1 elimination looked bleak on Saturday, Red Bull’s small ‘tweak’ transformed Verstappen’s car for Sunday, as he charged from pit lane to podium. It was one of his best performances of 2025.

Pierre Wache admitted rebuild of Max Verstappen’s car was a ‘huge risk’ in Brazil
Even though McLaren were suspicious of a Red Bull change, and wanted to find out whether Verstappen’s new engine for Sunday in Brazil would hit their cost cap, it appears that there’s no need to worry.
As well as confirmation from Pierre Wache that the team took a ‘huge risk’ when deciding to rebuild Verstappen’s car, Michael Schmidt says that Red Bull ‘accepted’ the budget cap permutations of their new engine.
“The car has been completely rebuilt,” he said. “Pierre Wache told me that, the head of technology, is taking a total risk again. Typical Red Bull, it’s in their DNA. They are taking a huge risk. They are installing a new engine.
“That might add another tenth, because engines lose horsepower when they age. They even accepted, let’s say, that this new engine, because it was installed for performance reasons, would be subject to the budget cap.”
Verstappen thinks cooler conditions ‘helped’ Red Bull, and brought them much closer to McLaren for the Grand Prix.
On the evidence of his race pace, it seems that if he had started in the top 10, he might have been able to challenge for victory.

Why Max Verstappen can’t lose all hope in the 2025 Formula 1 title battle just yet
The upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix promises to be one of the most pivotal events of the season for all three drivers in the title hunt.
Norris has identified it could be a disaster for Piastri, given that it’s a low grip track, and he has struggled at those recently.
However, Jolyon Palmer expects a nightmare for Norris as well, given that it’s one of the circuits that McLaren seem to struggle at.
If they’re on the fringe of the top six, there’s an opportunity for Verstappen to gain a lot of points on them. It means that he would have to win as well, and that’s a big ask, but he’d take having a chance right now.
