Pierre Gasly left seriously angry with ‘absolute idiot’ during Chinese Grand Prix

It wasn’t the easiest race of the season to navigate for any of the cars behind the frontrunners.

So many cars towards the back of the grid are extremely close in terms of speed, creating some great racing and unfortunately, some racing incidents too.

Alpine driver Pierre Gasly made his feelings clear over the team radio – relayed via Formula 1’s website – about one of his rivals.

It’s been a disastrous start to the season for French manufacturer Alpine.

After five races, they’re still searching for their first point alongside Williams and Sauber.

Esteban Ocon came the closest yet to the Alpine finally breaking that duck, finishing 11th in Shanghai.

After Gasly produced his best qualifying performance of the season at the Chinese Grand Prix, but an incident involving Logan Sargeant left him absolutely furious.

The £15,000-a-week Williams driver had another race to forget after qualifying last and eventually starting from the pit lane.

Pierre Gasly fuming with Logan Sargeant at the Chinese Grand Prix

It’s easy to understand why Pierre Gasly might not be in the best mood right now.

The 28-year-old is a race winner but right now he’s having to pull out all of the stops to avoid being eliminated in Q1 at every race.

Alpine have taken big steps backwards this year in the hope that it will improve their performance in the long term.

Considering the regulation changes happening at the beginning of 2026, it’s hard to see them coming close to their 4th-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship any time soon.

As Gasly was battling at the back of the pack with Logan Sargeant during the Chinese Grand Prix, he was left thoroughly unimpressed with one move the American tried to pull off.

Both drivers know they’ve got work to do to be in China next year with their contracts expiring at the end of the season.

Heading into turn six towards the end of the race, Sargeant dived down the inside of Gasly but ended up pushing the Frenchman very wide.

Gasly then came over the radio and simply said: “What an absolute idiot!”

The 28-year-old finished 13th, two places behind Ocon and being chased down by home town hero Zhou Guanyu.

Logan Sargeant was the final finisher of the 17th classified cars after both RB drivers and Valtteri Bottas retired.

Not only that, but he also received a ten-second penalty after a safety car infringement when exiting the pit lane.

Where will Pierre Gasly and Logan Sargeant be driving in 2025?

The Chinese Grand Prix wasn’t the best advert for Gasly or Sargeant as they both try and earn a new deal somewhere on the grid.

Right now, it looks unlikely that the American driver will still be in F1 in 2025.

There is a chance that Williams potentially replace Sargeant with Mercedes youngster Andrea Kimi Antonelli before the end of the season.

Pierre Gasly is in a stronger position, although if he’s got a performance-related clause in his contract to earn an extension, it’s hard to see him hitting it.

Gasly has reportedly been in discussions with Audi but he’s unlikely to be one of their first-choice drivers.

There’s still plenty of time for both drivers to prove they’re worthy of being in Formula 1 next year.
