Peter Windsor tells 39-podium F1 driver he should ‘stop’ racing if they’re slow in Hungary

Several teams will be looking to produce good results at the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix as it is one of the final races before Formula 1 stops for the summer break.

A driver that will need to produce a better result than his last six races is Sergio Perez, who faces being ousted from his seat at Red Bull if he does not show signs of improvment in the next two races.

Red Bull has specified that Perez must finish no further than 100 points behind teammate Max Verstappen before the mid-season break and currently he trails him by 137 points.

If he fails to outscore Verstappen or suffers another dissapointing weekend, Red Bull might make changes to their drive lineup midway through the season.

The Hungaroring is one of the slower circuits on the F1 calendar, with teams often bringing Monaco-spec rear wings to the track in a bid to add extra downforce through the twisty and narrow parts of the track.

Perez finished last years Hungarian GP on the podium following a late overtake on polesitter Lewis Hamilton, but still suffered a setback when he qualified in P9 and crashed in first practice.

Windsor believes Perez should consider stopping if he is unable to match Verstappen at the track, considering it is less of a challenge than other tracks on the calendar.

“Every point counts. In the Constructors’ Championship maybe Red Bull would be scoring more points now, but I can’t imagine Perez will be slow in Hungary. If he is slow in Hungary then he needs to stop I think, because it’s not going to be a very difficult circuit for him,” said Windsor.

It is expected that Perez, who has earned the majority of his 39 podiums in his F1 career at Red Bull, could be replaced by Liam Lawson after he impressed in his five-race outing last season as a stand-in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo.

But at a recent test at Silverstone he failed to impress Red Bull engineers enough to warrent putting him in the seat immediatly, sparking questions over who they could put in the seat.

Ricciardo has also failed to grab attention with his recent results for sister team RB, after only score points at three races so far this season.

Yuki Tsunoda could make his debut for the main team, but team principal Christian Horner believes he might struggle up against Verstappen as his teammate. It will be a difficult decision for Red Bull, but the team must make a decision in the interests of defending its Constructors’ title.
