The first race of the 2026 Formula 1 season might end up being one of the most unpredictable and exciting of the decade.

Lando Norris begins his title defence at the Australian Grand Prix – the same place he opened the season with a victory just under 12 months ago.

It was a heartbreaking day for teammate Oscar Piastri, who looked faster than him all weekend, and should have won without a spin in tricky conditions.

McLaren face a big challenge to defend both of their titles this year, with the 2026 F1 regulations set to mix the running order up a little.

Piastri has set a date to decide his McLaren future, amid rumours that he could look to leave his current team if their management of the Papaya Rules doesn’t go down too well.

McLaren have been warned about letting Piastri leave, especially considering how much he has developed over the last few seasons.

As a talent, he’s really starting to come on. Being a championship contender in just his third season was impressive in itself.

But there’s no better time for redemption than now, and the first race of the season, which also happens to be his home event, is a great opportunity.

He has to avenge the disappointment of missing out on the title, as well as winning his home race last year. It’s a chance to really attack his teammate.

That’s why, for Norris, it could be one of the toughest weekends he ever has to face, with the pressure of being reigning champion on his shoulders for the first time.

Just look at how Valtteri Bottas burst out of the blocks against Lewis Hamilton in 2019. No one expected him to win the season-opener, but he dominated.

F1 fans see Piastri as a potential champion in 2026, but predicting it without having seen the cars on track yet might be unwise. Who knows what sort of chassis they have put together?

That’s a run he’ll be looking to extend in 2026, and should be able to if McLaren can give him a strong car. They’ve more than proven that they have the resources to.
