Oscar Piastri believes the new F1 regulations are a ‘step in the right direction,’ but one aspect of the new rules makes him optimistic.
The new F1 regulations have not gone down entirely well with many people involved in Formula 1, including, and perhaps especially, the drivers.
Lando Norris was barred from criticising the regulations after the world champion went quite heavy-handed in his earlier comments.
Should F1 make small tweaks to the rules, rather than major changes?
Even Damon Hill has said the new regulations limit the drivers and what they are capable of doing, given how much the car’s performance is reliant on the software and electrical power.
However, despite all these complaints, Oscar Piastri remains confident that things will improve, especially due to one major change that these new regulations have brought about.

Oscar Piastri explains why new F1 regulations are ‘refreshing’ for veteran drivers despite complaints
Speaking in an interview with High Performance Racing, Oscar Piastri addressed the new F1 regulations and the recent changes made.
While he thinks the new regulations have brought about some much-needed change, there is some complexity to the new rules.
But it’s the collaborative effort between drivers and F1 officials over adjusting the new regulations that has given Piastri the most confidence about their long-term success.
“It’s hard to say now. I think there are definitely some rule changes that are a step in the right direction. Some of the stuff around the power you get from the boost button…
“There’s a lot of rules I need to look through and see what specifically changes. It’s still complex. With the engines we’ve got, there’s always going to be a compromise somewhere.
“For me, the biggest thing has been the coordination and collaboration between the driver teams, F1, and the FIA. It’s been quite refreshing for some of the older guys to see the collaboration.”

F1 is back! Who is going to win the Miami Grand Prix?
Oscar Piastri admits new regulations need tweaks, but patience is needed
Speaking further in the interview, Piastri noted that the new regulations are far from perfect, and there does need to be some adjustment and implementation of tweaks this year and in the years to come.
“I think there probably will need to be some further tweaks. How easy there are to implement this year, I don’t know.
“But I’m sure there will be some changes next year or in the future. It’s definitely going in the right direction. Hopefully, we see that on show in Miami.”
Tweaks and changes were necessary for the success and efficacy of the new regulations. Perhaps this is why Mercedes were willing to sacrifice some of their advantages in the recent changes to the rules.
Piastri, outside of the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers, is one of the few people on the grid who has taken a level-headed approach to the new regulations.
By no means are drivers unjustified in being frustrated. But for a driver as young as Piastri to display a level of maturity over new regulations that have, at times, hampered him this season is an excellent sign of his maturity.
Perhaps the changes implemented over the season hiatus will yield positive results this weekend at the Miami Grand Prix.
