Oscar Piastri and McLaren’s disastrous start to the Formula 1 season came down to the new regulations.

It was far from a happy homecoming for Oscar Piastri at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. If last year’s race was unfortunate, this year can be considered an absolute Australian nightmare for Piastri.

Prior to the race, Piastri crashed his car, leading to him being ruled out of the race entirely. The Australian native had to watch his entire home race from the McLaren garage.

Anthony Davidson credited Piastri’s crash to a power issue, noting that the young driver didn’t anticipate just how volatile the battery conditions would be.

After his crash, Piastri seemingly confirmed the speculation, providing insight into just how much of a surprise the burst of power was.

Oscar Piastri admits drastic power surge caught him off guard in lead up to crash

Oscar Piastri spoke in the immediate aftermath of his pre-race crash. The McLaren driver admitted that the battery issues played a huge part in the crash.

Along with the cold tyres, it was the volatility of coming out with almost no battery, only to have 100 kilowatts more power than he expected, that led to the crash.

“We had a bit of an issue out of the pits with no battery. The actual crash, there was a combination of a couple of things, you know, I think there’s a large element of just me, you know, cold tyres, I clipped the exit kerb.”

“But I also had 100 kilowatts more power than I expected, so you put all of those together, and unfortunately, it ends in the result we got. It’s obviously just disappointing and a scenario that shouldn’t be happening.”

“Essentially, I was at less throttle than what I was in qualifying, and the way the rules kind of stipulate how the torque demand has to work, I actually got 100 kilowatts more power than if I would have been at full throttle.”

Oscar Piastri and McLaren must use Australian GP experience as teachable moment

Crashing just moments before the first race, especially your home race, has to sting for a driver as good and as ambitious as Oscar Piastri.

However, if there is any silver lining to take, it is that their first colossal mistake is already behind them, and McLaren can figure out exactly what went wrong for them.

In an F1 season, mistakes are inevitable. It’s the timing of these mistakes that can make the difference between immense success and tragic heartbreak.

The entire McLaren team, along with Piastri, must understand what went wrong and work out how to avoid this issue come next week in China.
